Energy Management Engineer

The Energy Management Engineer plays a pivotal role in the Canada Sales team, responsible for identifying, qualifying, and quantifying energy upgrades, utility supply, and incentive opportunities, as well as facility operating cost improvements for target projects across Canada. This position is based in Toronto.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Developing Strategic Partnerships: Qualify potential consulting engineers and mechanical contracting partners to collaborate on energy upgrades, guiding them through the project development process.
  2. Project Development and Analysis: Accurately assess and provide feedback on project engineering risk. Conduct thorough building assessments to identify energy conservation opportunities, primarily in mechanical and electrical systems, in commercial, institutional, high-rise residential, industrial, data center facilities, and district energy systems. Develop scopes of work for consulting engineers performing investment-grade building audits and effectively analyze and assess the economic impacts of utility company rate structures, rebates, incentives, and supply-side options in diverse customer environments. Utilize simulation software and spreadsheets to accurately represent pre- and post-retrofit equipment, systems, and building operations. Manage and implement all phases of projects with customers from development through final installation verification.
  3. Program Management and Oversight: Negotiate with and oversee outside contractors. Assignments involve customer projects with substantial technical complexity and initial identification and development of programs, including budgets and savings targets. Collaborate with government and provincial institutions to register for sustainability programs and support customers' applications for incentives aimed at reducing carbon emissions.
  4. Technical Support and Analysis: Provide technical analysis and review for energy upgrade projects. Develop quotations based on energy analysis of heating and cooling loops, including Return on Investment and Payback calculations. Serve as a technical resource for the engineering team on complex and advanced engineering projects. Create monthly reports on energy upgrades progress (Booking/Quoting).
  5. Organizational Communication and Training: Effectively develop and deliver customer presentations. Coach other team members in all aspects of energy engineering. Explore new technologies and develop presentations for the information of engineers and team members.
Role Requirements:
  1. BSME degree or technical equivalent required.
  2. Minimum of 5+ years of relevant experience with HVAC systems and proficiency with energy analysis tools such as DOE2, TRACE, and System Analyzer required.
  3. Experience in studying cost and savings from energy conservation measures.
  4. CEM certification required or obtained within the first six months of employment; PE registration preferred.
  5. In-depth knowledge of HVAC systems and components, computer simulation tools, energy consumption profiles in buildings, utility company rates/programs, utility supply options, engineering economics, and cost savings opportunities.
  6. Design and application knowledge of facility HVAC, central plant piping, controls, and electrical systems.
  7. Understanding/knowledge of specialized (compressed air, process cooling/heating, etc.) industrial processes is desired.
  8. Exceptional ability, proficiency, and experience with computer applications.
  9. Understanding of construction processes and schedules.
  10. Excellent communication skills and ability to interface professionally with customers.
  11. Hands-on project development and customer contact.
  12. Ability and initiative to work independently, a self-starter with a high energy level.
  13. Ability to work regularly and dependably and function in a team environment.
  14. Demonstrated ability to cope with stress and maintain a pleasant and cooperative temperament with internal and external customers.
  15. Demonstrated ability to perform mental tasks such as making decisions, learning, thinking rationally, and exercising good judgment.
  16. Demonstrated ability to utilize conflict resolution skills.
