Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled Registered Orthopaedic Technologist to join our Ambulatory Care Department at Headwaters Health Care Centre.

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing client-centred clinical care to support the delivery of orthopaedic services in the Fracture Clinic.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced technologist to work collaboratively with a high-functioning interdisciplinary team to provide safe and effective patient care.

About the Role:

As a Registered Orthopaedic Technologist, you will be responsible for carrying out responsibilities and assisting in the care of patients in the orthopaedic clinic. You will function under the direction of the Orthopaedic Surgeon and work with the healthcare team to provide a safe environment for patients, staff, physicians, volunteers, and others.

You will be accountable for applying and removing dressings, assessing wound conditions, and consulting with physicians for further orders when problems are identified. Additionally, you will cast application, measure and fit patients for orthopaedic devices and ambulatory aids, instruct patients regarding care and proper use, and remove sutures, K wires, pins, and external fixators using sterile technique.

Responsibilities:

  • Apply and remove dressings, assess wound conditions, and consult with physicians for further orders
  • Cast application, including adjusting, removing, repairing, bivalving, wedging, and windowing of casts
  • Measure and fit patients for orthopaedic devices and ambulatory aids, instruct patients on proper use
  • Assist in the application, maintenance, and adjustment of traction (skin, skeletal, and manual)
  • Remove sutures, K wires, pins, and external fixators using sterile technique
  • Fabricate and apply splints and bandages, instruct patients on care and proper use
  • Instruct patients and families on cast care, skin care, and medical information
  • Order and maintain equipment, manage orthopaedic supplies
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals, interact with other departments to obtain resources needed for patient care
  • Establish effective helping relationships with patients and families, maintain patient dignity and confidentiality
  • Provide on-the-job instruction and demonstration of casting techniques to other health professionals
  • Charting, documentation, and maintaining accurate notes and records
  • Participate in ongoing education and development, patient safety initiatives

Qualifications:

  • Graduate of certified Orthopedic Technology program recognized by Canadian Society of Orthopaedic Technologists (CSOT) required
  • Current registration and good standing with CSOT for no less than five years
  • Successful completion of written, oral, and practical examinations of CSOT, current membership in the society, and certification through continuing education program
  • Minimum eight years full-time work experience in a Canadian hospital, working in fracture/cast/emergency clinic directly in orthopaedic patient care
  • Current B.C.L.S. Ontario Heart Foundation Standards
  • Advanced knowledge of anatomical structures, ability to describe orthopaedic conditions
  • Ability to apply, adjust, and remove all common and difficult orthopaedic devices
  • Advanced knowledge of theory and application of skin, skeletal, and manual traction
  • Ability to interpret most fractures and dislocations on X-ray film
  • Ability to supervise and train students and orthopaedic technicians
  • Expert ability to apply specialty casts, assist in special procedures such as advanced wound care and fracture reductions

Salary Range: $36.84-$51.77 per hour
