Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Sugar Process Engineer to join our team at Redpath Sugar Ltd. in Toronto. The successful candidate will be part of the Canadian Centre of Excellence, a 1-2 year program designed to bring international professionals up to ASR standards.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to add new skills, both technical and managerial, and work on complex sugar manufacturing processes. You will be responsible for monitoring the technical performance of the plant, including energy, water, sucrose loss, productivity, cost, and product quality.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in chemical engineering and a minimum of 8 years' experience in a supervisory and/or technical position at a sugar refinery or factory. You will also possess excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, as well as strong supervisory, technical, interpersonal, and communication skills.

Responsibilities
  1. Regulatory Compliance: Familiarize yourself with ASR regulations in safety, quality, continuous improvement, environmental, and working in a unionized environment.
  2. Software Competency: Become competent in process control HMI and trends and statistical process control software functions.
  3. Data Access: Access and use lab reports, daily shift reports, continuous improvement tools, SAP maintenance system, Kronos attendance system, Visikum, and other relevant systems.
  4. Service Understanding: Familiarize yourself with ASR services such as steam supply, power and compressed air supply, lake water cooling system, condensate management, waste water treatment, mud disposal, resin and carbon transfer, salt and lime offloading, specials transfer, yellow sugar transfer, sugar supply to packaging, bulk and liquid sugar loading, molasses storage, brix control and loading.
  5. Process Items: Familiarize yourself with process items such as special transfers, yellow sugar transfers, sugar supply to packaging, bulk and liquid sugar loading, molasses storage, and brix control and loading.
  6. Technical Performance Monitoring: Monitor the technical performance of the plant, including energy, water, sucrose loss, productivity, cost, and product quality.
  7. Reporting and Recommendations: Report situations where the plant is not meeting identified technical targets and recommend corrective actions.
  8. Interfacing with Departments: Interface with all departments, including Quality, Process, Maintenance, Corporate Engineering, and Packaging.
  9. Process Flow Diagrams: Prepare process flow diagrams that include material, energy, and utility balances based on existing equipment or recommended processes.
  10. Operator Training: Assist in the training of operators when new projects are implemented or retraining is required.
  11. Safety, Quality, and Sustainability: Participate in all aspects of the safety, quality, and sustainability programs.
Requirements
  1. Education: BS Chemical, Mechanical or Sugar Engineering (or equivalent)
  2. Experience: Minimum of 8 years' sugar experience (a must)
  3. Language Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
  4. Leadership and Process Improvement Skills: Proven leadership and process improvement skills
  5. Multitasking and Independence: Manage multiple priorities with overlapping tasks and work independently with minimal supervision
