Job Summary

Halton Healthcare is seeking a skilled and compassionate Mental Health Assistant to join our team. As a Mental Health Assistant, you will play a vital role in providing support and care to patients with mental health needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide patient observation and supervision, as directed by nursing and medical staff.
  • Alert nursing staff to any changes in patient presentation or behavior.
  • Document patient observations and care as required by physician orders.
  • Conduct routine patient checks to ensure patient safety and well-being.
  • Accompany patients during transfers and appointments within the hospital.
  • Support patients and clinical staff in ward activities and routines.
  • Develop and implement recreational activities to promote patient engagement and reduce agitation.
  • Assist with admissions, discharges, and transfers.
  • Support patients during dining room service.
  • Participate in program-related committees.
  • Ensure patient belongings are stored and organized properly.
  • Monitor patients entering and leaving the unit.
  • Respond to patient and family inquiries.
  • Demonstrate expertise in mental health care and adhere to hospital standards.
Requirements
  • Ability to physically intervene and perform patient restraints as per hospital policy.
  • Post-secondary diploma in a related field required.
  • Education or experience in mental health or healthcare required.
  • Strong observation skills.
  • Understanding of mental health issues and challenges faced by patients.
  • Experience working with patients with escalated or agitated behaviors.
  • Conflict resolution and de-escalation skills.
  • Ability to be respectful, nurturing, and empathetic.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Prevention and Management of Aggressive Behaviour Course (CPI) within 6 months.
  • Working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office.
