Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Community Volunteer Engagement Specialist to join our team at The Salvation Army. This is a full-time position that offers an estimated salary of $55,000 - $65,000 per year.

About the Role

The successful candidate will be responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating volunteers for multiple programs simultaneously across various facilities. They will collaborate with staff members to ensure a range of duties are completed as assigned.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop or assist in developing policies and procedures for the program with senior management approval
  • Participate in departmental budget development and operate within approved financial limits to ensure optimal resource utilization
  • Liaise with educational institutions and volunteer bureaus to promote volunteerism within the Ministry Unit and attract applicants
  • Match volunteer skills with work/activity needs within the ministry; prepare task lists for volunteers for guidance
  • Recruit, orientate, train, evaluate, recognize, and assign work in accordance with Salvation Army policies and procedures; work with managers to submit volunteer incident reports
  • Be a positive spiritual witness to volunteers and program participants, and the general public through your work, speech, and positive and courteous manner; share the gospel as opportunities arise
  • Maintain an approved record keeping system, tracking volunteer hours, etc.
  • Develop, review, and revise the volunteer handbook
  • May assist with special events and outings, and seasonal events
Critical Relationship Management

The Community Volunteer Engagement Specialist will interact with various stakeholders, including:

  • Governance Boards and Councils: May interact with the Community Council/mission board as requested
  • Internal: Coworkers, colleagues, Dept managers, Corps Officers, Church congregation, and members
  • External: Educational institutions, general public, volunteer sourcing organizations
Managerial / Technical Responsibility

The incumbent will report directly to the CFS dept lead – currently Community Program Coordinator and coordinate and supervise volunteers (no paid staff).

Financial and Material Management

The successful candidate will be responsible for minor financial matters and wise use of own resources, including handling small amounts of cash. They will track spendings for volunteer Department's within the approved budget and may procure supplies, safety items, etc.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

The ideal candidate should possess:

  • Two or more years of community college in a related field
  • Certificate in volunteer administration would be an asset
  • Valid Driver's License and clean driver's abstract
  • Proof of Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check or willing to obtain
  • Abuse prevention course through The Salvation Army – we will provide the training
  • Alternative combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Must be qualified to work in Canada today to apply for this position
