Design Transformation Leader for Power Transformers

As part of our growth, we seek a seasoned Design Transformation Leader to join our team. The ideal candidate will have 10+ years of experience in the design of liquid-filled power transformers from 50 to 200 MVA, up to 230 kV, and larger.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead mechanical design of power transformers from 50 to 200 MVA and up to 230 kV
- Review and analysis of client specifications
- Detailed understanding of power transformer mechanical design, including external and internal features, shipping, and field considerations
- Familiarity with CSA, IEEE, and ANSI standards related to power transformers
- Deep understanding of North American utility specifications for power transformers from a mechanical design perspective
- Create detailed drawings, bills of material, work instructions, and upload design information to our ERP system
- Perform engineering analysis of forces, stress, strain, buckling, rupture, electrical clearances, center of gravity, seismic, and vacuum
- Conduct FEA numerical analysis as needed to verify design for stress, strain, buckling, and rupture assessments
- Anticipate and assist with production processes and procedures to ensure high-quality and smooth production
- Collaborate with our team to establish design standards, templates, and automation for transformer design at Northern
- Technical leadership for our organization
- Mentor junior mechanical designers, production staff, and other company members
- Engage directly with suppliers to understand their capabilities, resolve quality issues, and identify new technologies
- Assist in generating new design rules, practices, and procedures
- Increase use of software tools to improve productivity and reduce errors
- Develop parametric design models and templates, design calculations, sharing of technical information, and ERP uploading
- Implement design automation projects through establishing design rules and templates, and using Inventor iLogic and API
- Automate links between CAD, PLM, and ERP systems
- Ensure all work is performed in accordance with our values of Quality, Safety, and Service, and our Environment, Health & Safety procedures, and ISO 9001 management system
- Be flexible and take initiative on engineering and management tasks as required by a fast-growing, mid-sized company
Qualifications:
- Engineering degree and professional licensure in Canada, the US, or Mexico
- 10+ years of engineering design work experience in a power transformer design and manufacturing environment
- Training in welding processes and quality assessment
- Excellent computer skills, including 3D CAD, numerical analysis, and related workflow programming
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and accuracy
- Excellent people skills – mentoring, team building, motivating, and change management
- Strong client skills – empathy, trust building, and fact-based decision-making
- Language: willing to continuously improve English skills
- Will relocate to the Greater Toronto Area, Ontario
