Job Title: Education Support Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Education Support Specialist to join our team at School District #58 (Nicola-Similkameen). As an Education Support Specialist, you will play a vital role in supporting students with exceptionalities, youth with learning disabilities, and those on modified alternate programs.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Work with students with exceptionalities, youth with learning disabilities, and those on modified alternate programs
  • Implement student Individual Educational Plans (IEPs), Individual Care Plans, academic, and other individual programs
  • Provide instructional support to students by implementing educational programs as determined by the teacher/resource team/Principal
  • Operate adaptive technology, computers, audiovisual, and other various equipment
  • Implement behavior management programs as outlined and determined by the teacher/resource team
  • Foster student independence and appropriate peer interactions
  • Maintain, copy, transcribe, files records on students and liaise, when required, with counsellors, social workers, parent/guardians, and teachers as part of the school-based team
  • Provide personal/health care and physical safety assistance to students
  • Work collaboratively and professionally as a member of the school-based team
Qualifications and Attributes:
  • Grade 12 or equivalency
  • Must be willing to maintain current CPI status
  • Level 1 First Aid Certificate may be required
  • Successfully completed or currently enrolled in the Education Assistant Certificate program, which includes documented training in the following areas:
    • Pervasive developmental disorders, including ASD, FASD, and complex behavioral needs
    • Developmental and sensory needs and disorders
    • Personal care: dressing, toileting, feeding, lifting, transferring, seizure management
    • Technology-assisted programs (e.g., Augmentative communication devices, Boardmaker, Apps, and other software)
    • Behavior support: conflict resolution, anger management, nonviolent behavioral interventions, behavior/safety/crisis/emergency plans
    • Learning challenges: learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, learning challenges
  • Formal POPARD training or experience - when available
  • Proven ability to remain regulated in challenging situations
  • Proven ability to develop positive relationships with students, staff, and families
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible/adaptable
  • Physically able to participate in a dynamic classroom environment
  • Ability to work under the direction of a team and also to work independently
  • WHMIS Certificate and other online safety training provided by the District to be completed within the probationary period
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to be an integral part of a team
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License
