Job Title: Early Childhood Education Teacher's Assistant

Shíshálh Nation is seeking a qualified Early Childhood Education Teacher's Assistant to join our team.

Job Summary:

The Early Childhood Educator Assistant will provide high-quality inclusive childcare programming and supervision for young children in a group setting. This position will be responsible for guiding and instructing children in various educational subjects and life skills, while also assisting with nurturing developmental and cognitive skills such as physical, mental, and social development.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Program Planning: Plan, carry out, and assess developmentally appropriate activities and experiences in harmony with the centre's philosophy.
  • Activity Implementation: Provide a daily balance of active/quiet, indoor/outdoor, and individual/group activities.
  • Space and Resource Management: Establish and carry out a daily activity schedule that incorporates child-directed activity, care routines, and transition times.
  • Child Support: Assist children in expressing themselves by listening and responding with questions or comments that extend conversations.
  • Teaching Techniques: Use a variety of teaching techniques, including modelling, observing, questioning, demonstrating, and reinforcing.
  • Observation and Documentation: Conduct daily observations and documentation of children's progress.
  • Self-Help Encouragement: Encourage and assist children to practice self-help daily.
  • Cultural Awareness: Plan and carry out experiences that foster an understanding of a variety of cultures and value systems.
  • Problem-Solving: Plan and carry out activities that encourage problem-solving.
  • Diversity and Acceptance: Provide experiences and play materials that actively promote diversity and acceptance in interactions and attitudes.
Qualifications and Skills:
  • Education: Early Childhood Educator Assistant Certificate (or in the process of completing).
  • Licenses and Certifications: Valid ECEA License – registered in BC – which must be maintained throughout the duration of employment.
  • Experience: At least 1-year experience in a daycare setting.
  • Certifications: Valid C.P.R. and First Aid certificate.
  • Knowledge and Understanding: Knowledge and understanding of the Community Care and Assisted Living Act and Child Care Licensing Regulations.
  • Cultural Competence: An understanding of the issues that affect First Nation children and their families.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Excellent interpersonal skills with parents and community members.
  • Attitude and Flexibility: Mature and responsible attitude toward work, with a willingness to work flexible hours.
  • Criminal Record Check: Negative criminal records check with the vulnerable sector.
