About the Role

Burgundy Diamond Mines is seeking a highly qualified Geotechnical Engineer to join our team in the Open Pit division. As a key member of our operations team, you will play a pivotal role in supporting mine operations, risk mitigation strategies, and ensuring safe and efficient mining practices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Slope Monitoring and Data Management: Organize and conduct slope monitoring systems and geotechnical data collection management to ensure accurate and reliable data.
  • Ground Probe Radar and Procedures: Maintain and evaluate Ground Probe Radar data, procedures, and work instructions to ensure compliance and effectiveness.
  • Geotechnical Hazard Management: Ensure open pit mining operations are maintained to confirm an acceptable level of risk from geotechnical hazards on a daily basis.
  • Geotechnical Designs and Instructions: Provide geotechnical designs and operational instructions to support open pit operations at EKATI.
  • Research and Evaluation: Research and evaluate systems and equipment to improve safety and efficiency of mining operations.
  • Geotechnical Stability Assessment: Assess geotechnical stability of open pit slopes and wedges and recommend appropriate ground support.
  • Ground Control Standards and Management Plan: Review and update Ground Control Standards on a regular basis and ensure the Ground Control Management Plan for open pits is followed and implemented at all stages of the mining process.
  • Geotechnical Data Provision: Ensure mine engineers are provided with required geotechnical data to develop optimal mine plans.
  • Inspections and Reporting: Complete mine inspections, internal reporting, and issue technical reports as needed.
  • Job Hazard Analysis and Work Instructions: Develop Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and Work Instructions (WI) for all tasks related to the above responsibilities for combined mining operations.
  • Hydrology and Hydrogeology Studies: Conduct hydrology and hydrogeology studies, provide dewatering designs and operational instructions to manage water ingress and inrush risk to mine operations.
Requirements
  • Education: Degree in geotechnical engineering, specializing in rock mechanics or a relevant discipline.
  • Experience: Minimum 3-4 years of experience in geotechnical engineering.
  • Designation: Designation as a Professional Engineer in the Northwest Territories or working toward the ability to obtain this designation.
  • Certification: NWT WCB Supervisor Level One or Level Two certification or the ability to obtain this.
  • Software Skills: Advanced experience with industry software such as RocScience suite, GeoStudio, and Maptek suite.
  • Project Management: Experience managing multiple mining and/or construction-related projects simultaneously.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work independently or in a team setting.
