Job Summary

This role is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing the execution of compliance standards and controls related to supplier food safety and compliance initiatives from sourcing suppliers through to product lifecycle.

The Senior Manager, Supplier Food Safety and Compliance will work closely with cross-functional teams, including Private Brands, Sourcing and Merchandising, to develop and implement food safety standards and procedures related to sourcing, development, marketing, and merchandising.

This position will develop and deliver training and communication to key stakeholders, monitor the execution of the supplier food safety program, including monitoring external testing and inspection labs and labeling providers, and monitor the regulatory landscape to ensure the food safety programs are compliant.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Lead the Supplier Food Safety team responsible for supplier food safety programs, including Private Brand supplier approvals, product launches, recalls, customer complaints, investigations, regulatory inquiries, food labeling, etc.
  2. Oversee the development of training, communications, policies, and guidelines applicable to supplier food safety programs for domestic and imported products and ensure they are consistent with Walmart global and market requirements and local regulation.
  3. Facilitate food safety training for stakeholders, as needed.
  4. Provide technical assistance and advisory services pertaining to the launch of programs involving internal and external business partners (i.e., Private Brands, marketing campaigns, imports, fresh program).
  5. Complete formal Food Safety Program reassessment on an annual basis or upon any food safety system change and/or regulation that would mandate reassessment.
  6. Communicate changes to internal and external stakeholders.
  7. Communicate Walmart food safety standards to business partners and suppliers and monitor compliance with such standards.
  8. Collaborate with suppliers and cross-functional partners to address challenges associated with processes, suppliers, and products and develop appropriate food safety and compliance testing programs.
  9. Track changes in federal and provincial laws relevant to food safety and regulatory compliance regarding new regulations, Health Canada, and Canadian Food Inspection Agency initiatives and communicate findings and options to address the impact to the business and suppliers as appropriate.
  10. Provide oversight and direction to the food recall manager, who is responsible for advising on whether recalls are required for specific products and coordinating the execution of recall.
  11. Track all product complaints and supplier issues and communicate to merchants. Respond to safety and regulatory compliance-related complaints, both to government and to suppliers, and ensure that quality-related concerns are forwarded to merchants.
  12. Create, maintain, and execute training content relevant to Supplier food safety & Compliance portfolio to business stakeholders. Provide ongoing coaching & support to direct reports with a focus on building competencies and ensuring consistency of execution.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in food science, microbiology, or related field
  • 8 to 10 years' experience in food manufacturing
  • Advanced food safety certifications
  • HACCP certified auditor or equivalent
  • Lead a team
