Job Summary:

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is seeking a skilled Plumbing and Gas Safety Codes Officer to join our team. As a key member of our Permitting and Inspection Services department, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and compliance of plumbing and gas systems within our community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Inspect installations to ensure compliance with relevant codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Examine applications and issue permits for private sewage disposal systems.
  • Prepare permit conditions and notices to alert designers, contractors, and homeowners of deficiencies.
  • Review permits for large-scale projects to ensure completeness and adherence to requirements.
  • Follow up on conditions and notices to ensure deficiencies are corrected.
  • Keep accurate records of inspector's notices and utilize the Accela program to complete reports.
  • Answer general inquiries related to plumbing and gas permits and code matters.
  • Investigate non-permit complaints, take necessary actions, and prepare reports.
  • Gather evidence and prepare files for prosecution and attend court as required.
  • Maintain current knowledge of the Alberta Safety Codes Act, applicable municipal bylaws, and trade-related regulations.

Requirements:

  • Extensive knowledge of the Alberta Safety Codes Act, Gas Protection Act, Plumbing National Code, and Gasfitter Trade Regulation.
  • Considerable knowledge of standard methods, practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in the plumbing and gasfitter trade.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and handle complex Code-related items.
  • Proven ability to read and interpret engineering plans, drawings, and specifications.
  • Ability to clarify and convey information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and the municipal permit system (Accela).
  • Strong multitasking skills and ability to manage a high volume of tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively schedule work to meet service demands.
  • Exceptionally strong customer service and interpersonal skills.

Education and Experience:

  • Certifications through the Alberta Safety Codes Council are required, including Plumbing Group A (installations) and Group B (PSDS), Gas Group A (installations).
  • Two years of directly related experience, including trade experience, is required.

Other Requirements:

  • Submission of a Criminal Record Check.
  • A valid Class Five (5) Operator's License is required for business use.
  • Ability to work outside in all conditions.
  • Medical and physical ability to perform all duties of the position.
