About the Role

The Senior Manager, Commercial Strategy and Events will play a pivotal role in CN's commercial organization, with direct C-suite access and a direct report to the Chief Commercial Officer. This key position will help drive the company's growth strategy and business processes, ensuring seamless execution and performance management.

Main Responsibilities
  1. Commercial Strategy
    1. Collaborate with the Chief Commercial Officer and business unit executives to support and drive execution management around strategic initiatives, such as growth pipeline development, IT projects, customer improvement activities, and internal continuous improvement projects.
    2. Lead the commercial strategy team to manage the overall commercial strategy.
    3. Support the Chief Commercial Officer in reviewing and analyzing financial performance, business cases, strategic reviews, investment opportunities, and business processes.
    4. Manage workstreams and materials for regular cadence of internal commercial team business reviews.
    5. Support the Chief Commercial Officer with sales and marketing communications and materials for internal- and external-facing engagement streams, such as board presentations, speaking engagements, and budget management.
  2. Commercial Events and Communications
    1. Oversee the customer events and experiences team and manage their budget.
    2. Work with business unit executives to identify and select the best platforms and conferences to support CN's goals and maximize the return on its participation and support.
    3. Lead the customer advisory council and develop a clear set of initiatives that will have the greatest positive impact on as many attending council members as possible and on CN.
  3. Administration and People Leadership
    1. Draft, review, and execute communications on behalf of the Chief Commercial Officer.
    2. Serve as a resource to support the application of sound project and change management principles around strategic initiatives.
    3. Represent the commercial group in functional townhall and collaboration workshops to ensure integrated planning and stakeholder involvement.
Working Conditions

The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure and stress while running simultaneous projects. The role requires occasional travel (30%) within North America.

Requirements

Minimum 5 years of previous management experience:

  • Experience interacting with executives.
  • Experience in strategy development.
  • Experience handling multiple stakeholders.
  • Experience in leading and motivating teams.
  • Experience in communication and marketing campaign development, execution, and measurement.
Education/Certification/Designation
  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration or Operations Management.
  • Chartered financial analyst (CFA).
  • Master's Degree in Business Administration.
  • Change Management (PROSCI) certification.
  • Project Management (PMP) certification.
Competencies
  • Strong financial and business acumen.
  • Ability to drive execution and influence senior business executives.
  • Unselfish team player, skilled at collaboration and sharing information.
  • Strategic thinker and disciplined process manager.
Technical Skills/Knowledge
  • Strong computer skills and knowledge of Systems, Applications, and Products (SAP), Business Warehouse (BW), Microsoft (MS) Office including MS Project, and CN internal Systems.
  • Knowledge of railroad operations and back-office process is desirable.
  • Strong understanding of technology trends, change management, and project management strategies.
