Plumber - Maintenance and Repair Specialist

Job Summary

BCIT's Campus Planning and Facilities department is seeking a regular, full-time Plumber to carry out planned and emergency maintenance, repair, and installation of institute water, gas, drainage, air, heating systems, and backflow prevention assemblies.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Respond to trouble calls, take corrective action, and troubleshoot problems on various systems.
  • Establish priorities and requirements for the Preventative Maintenance Plan, including items for regulatory reasons.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance on multiple interconnected systems, inspect, identify deficiencies, and take corrective action.
  • Estimate labor and materials for renovations, upgrades, and projects, reviewing project drawings, sketches, and specifications.
  • Communicate with various departments and external contractors, working with difficult clients and explaining complex systems.
  • Stay current on advances in system and equipment design, learn from local suppliers, and adapt older systems to new components.
  • Upgrade existing systems to modern and efficient options.
  • Prepare drawings, sketches, layout diagrams, and estimates for internal projects.
  • Adhere to and promote safety standards required by regulatory bodies.
  • Make recommendations for improvement to Program Coordinators on building projects.
  • Prepare and complete work orders, including clearing stoppages, repairing and replacing fixtures, and performing minor cutting and drilling.
  • Resolve issues related to natural gas, cleaning, maintaining, and replacing systems.
  • Maintain an inventory of plumbing supplies.
  • Operate lifts to access equipment and systems, working at heights and in confined spaces.
  • Coordinate and monitor contractor work to ensure adherence to established standards.

Qualifications

  • A valid Trades Qualification or Interprovincial Trades Ticket, plus technical education and/or certifications in the relevant building trades industry.
  • Ability to assess blueprints and make recommendations for trade requirements.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues, with strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to maintain currency in the field and learn on the job.
  • Basic computer training and experience.
