Our mission is to promote access to justice and protect the rights of vulnerable populations. We have 300 staff members and 1,200 private practice lawyers working across the province to deliver exceptional results.

The Opportunity

As a Senior Legal Counsel, you will be responsible for conducting assigned files to professional standards and representing clients in duty counsel matters. You will work closely with our Legal Services Manager to ensure compliance with office policies and procedures. Your expertise will also be essential in participating in performance and staff meetings as required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct assigned files to professional standards, adhering to the Rules and Code of Conduct of the Law Society of Alberta and the Rules of LAA.
  • Represent clients in duty counsel matters to professional standards and in accordance with the Rules and Code of Conduct of the Law Society of Alberta and the Rules of LAA.
  • Ensure compliance with office policy and procedures.
  • Participate in performance and staff meetings as required.

Requirements

To succeed in this role, you will require:

  • A law degree from a recognized law school.
  • An active membership with the Law Society of Alberta.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in youth, criminal, family, immigration, and/or litigation practice, preferably with a focus on duty counsel representation.

KSA (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

You will possess:

  • Thorough knowledge of the Rules of Court, youth, criminal, and family law legislation.
  • Excellent research, writing, and drafting skills, as well as the ability to analyze complex legal issues and apply relevant laws to facts.
  • Strong advocacy, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills.
  • A high level of comfort working with technology and a willingness to learn new systems, including MS Office, web-based legal research tools, and other web-based resources.
  • The ability to investigate facts, identify issues, and advise clients and/or LAA on the most suitable course of action.
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to drive to circuit court locations.

We offer a competitive wage of approximately $90,000-$120,000 per annum, based on qualifications and experience, plus:
