Job Description

As a Forest Certification Coordinator, you will lead our North American forest certification program. You will utilize your expertise in forest certification processes to conduct internal and external audits for our operations in Canada and the US. Your role will involve working with our forest management and fiber procurement teams to ensure compliance with certification standards.

This position can be performed remotely from British Columbia or Alberta, or located at our Vancouver corporate office.

Responsibilities
  • You will assist management in matters related to forest certification and responsible forest management practices.
  • You will disseminate our corporate strategies on forest certification to divisional managers.
  • You will coordinate and support divisions regarding forestry issues, including regulation, policy, and government programs.
  • You will represent the company on technical files and committees with industry associations and government.
  • You will maintain and coordinate our forest management certification and chain of custody systems for all sites, including managing multi-site certificates and forest certification labels in marketing initiatives.
  • You will maintain our comprehensive multi-site certification program.
  • You will manage risk assessment and credit management systems for certified products in pulp, lumber, and mass timber businesses.
  • You will support implementation and maintenance of EUDR requirements for North American operations.
  • You will coordinate, develop, manage, and participate in internal verification audits of systems.
  • You will lead initiatives to increase forest certification percentages for wood purchasing in North America.
  • You will prepare management reviews as required by normative requirements, write minutes, and perform follow-ups.
  • You will coordinate or carry out calls for tender with registrars and manage budgets for certification.
  • You will coordinate and participate in annual external registration and verification audits.
  • You will train and assist regional contributors to certification programs as needed.
  • You will stay current with changes to forest regulation, policy, and certification standards; inform divisional coordinators and adapt corporate and divisional systems accordingly.
  • You will participate in consultations on proposed changes to certification standards.
  • You will sit on regional and national committees of certification standard organizations as required.
  • You will support our pulp, lumber, and mass timber sales organization with customer engagement.
  • You will support the development of LCA's for mass timber products.
  • You will collaborate in answering clients' questions related to forest certification, chain of custody, and forest practices.
  • You will collaborate on preparation of corporate annual reports.
  • You will keep regular certification-related corporate statistics.
  • You will advise management on matters related to product certification.
Qualifications and Experience
  • You must have a Bachelor's degree in forestry or a related field like environmental science or natural resources.
  • You should be a member of the Registered Professional Foresters (RPF) association or a related professional association.
  • You must have at least 5 years of experience in forest certification standards and processes, including auditing.
  • You must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • You should have knowledge of forest certification frameworks and organizations (SFI, PEFC, and FSC).
  • You must have strong project management skills with the ability to manage budgets, timelines, and resources effectively.
  • You must have excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present large amounts of information to audiences both in person and electronically.
  • You should have knowledge of legislation and policy governing sustainable forest management in British Columbia and Alberta.
  • You must be able to work as a team member, communicate with all levels of the organization, and adapt quickly to change.
Compensation and Benefits
  • The salary for this position is $95,000 - $110,000 per year, commensurate with education and experience.
  • Our group benefits package has no waiting period and includes extended health and dental benefits, a Health Care Spending Account, and a fitness allowance.
  • RRSP contributions are made by Mercer, with additional personal contributions matched by the company up to a certain percentage.
