**Job Title:** Elementary Education Specialist

**Job Summary:** We are seeking an experienced Elementary Education Specialist to join our team at the Toronto District School Board. The successful candidate will provide leadership in fostering equity and inclusiveness in the development and implementation of programs and services, and will work collaboratively with school administration and early years team to provide a positive, supportive learning environment that reflects the voices, choices, abilities, identities, and experiences of students.

**Key Responsibilities:**

Provide leadership in fostering equity and inclusiveness in the development and implementation of programs and services

Provide and model high expectations for all students

Provide a positive, supportive learning environment that reflects the voices, choices, abilities, identities, and experiences of students

Administer the second early reading screening to all students who require additional support in reading

Create, plan, and implement the instruction of foundational reading skills in meaningful and relevant contexts using culturally relevant texts, approaches, and materials

Provide explicit and systematic reading intervention to individual and/or small groups of students who require additional support in reading

Intentionally integrate and reinforce identity-affirming explicit reading instruction across the day/curriculum

Provide ongoing monitoring of students' progress in reading in collaboration with classroom educators

Monitor student learning and progress through the use of learning stories, pedagogical documentation, and layered assessments

Submit data to the Research Department on a regular basis

Facilitate job-embedded professional learning in culturally relevant and responsive evidence-based instructional strategies, reading intervention strategies, and literacy assessment and evaluation practices

Engage in job-embedded professional learning through modeling effective reading instruction that supports a joy of reading and positively affirms reader identity and co-teaching opportunities with classroom educators

**Qualifications and Skills:**

Ontario College of Teachers' Certificate of Qualification in good standing

Basic Qualifications in Primary

Candidates must have Reading Specialist Qualifications (preferred) or Primary Specialist Qualifications or equivalent

Recognized university degree, preferably at the Masters level

Successful experience with culturally relevant and responsive pedagogy, different reading intervention tools and strategies, and solid knowledge and implementation of comprehensive literacy practices

Experience or qualifications in Reading Recovery, English as Second Language, French, or Special Education would be an asset

Credibility as an innovative and effective educator

A minimum of 5 years of successful teaching with experience at the Primary Level

Demonstrated commitment to maintaining a learning/working environment that actively promotes and supports human rights

Outstanding oral and written communication skills, including report writing and presentation skills

In-depth knowledge of Ministry and TDSB literacy resources and practices

Demonstrated ability to solve problems and work with staff in a manner that fosters teacher agency and independence

In-depth knowledge of current educational issues and appropriate Ministry and Board policies, documents, and research

Demonstrated organizational, planning, mentoring, and staff development skills

Experience working in a leadership role with teachers
