Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled plumber to join our team at The University of British Columbia. As a key member of our facilities team, you will be responsible for performing maintenance, repair, and renovation work on gas, air, water, and waste disposal systems, as well as interior and exterior water mains and drainage systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain plumbing fixtures, backflow prevention devices, gas, air, water, fire protection systems, and waste disposal systems
  • Handle low-risk asbestos or other hazardous insulation materials following UBC policy and procedures
  • Carry out repair on machinery and equipment, inspect, diagnose defects, and take remedial action as required
  • Prepare cost estimates for jobs and order required materials
  • Work from oral and written instructions, work orders, and drawings
  • Assemble parts, equipment, fittings, and join them by soldering, brazing, gluing, screwing, calking, bolting, and other methods
  • Work in a correct and safe manner, in accordance with all safety standards, practices, procedures, and ensure personal protective equipment is worn where required
  • Respond to service requests and emergencies during normal working hours and after working hours in a safe and effective manner
  • Use all tools, equipment, and instruments he/she is competent to use required for work and is responsible for the correct and safe storing of equipment
  • Ensure good housekeeping is practiced in the plumbing shop and on site
  • Be responsible for work being completed in accordance with requirements and specifications
  • Keep current on preventative maintenance concepts, technology, and theory, and ensure familiarity with manufacturer and regulatory maintenance requirements
Requirements
  • Trade certification to journeyperson level as a plumber
  • Valid BC Gas Fitter B License with electrical endorsement for low voltage
  • BC Cross Connection Control certificate
  • Valid BC Drivers Licence
  • Minimum 5 years of related experience
  • Ability to interpret drawings and specifications, sketches of work required, and maintenance manuals
  • Effective oral and written communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team environment
  • Ability to provide quality service to customers in a courteous and patient manner
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and productive working relationships
  • Ability to work various shift patterns dependent upon operational needs
  • Familiarity with controls and HVAC an asset
