The Role

To provide high-quality laboratory instruction, evaluation, and supervision of students in the Veterinary Technology program at Douglas College, and to ensure the effective operation of laboratory functions. The successful candidate will provide exceptional client-centred service to all stakeholder groups.

Responsibilities

1. Laboratory Instruction and Demonstration

  • Provides laboratory instruction and demonstration related to VTEC courses, subject to the curricula approval of VTEC faculty.
  • Instructs students with respect to the laboratory component of Veterinary Technology courses and assists students with difficulties related to the lecture component of courses.
  • Demonstrates the correct use of equipment in the laboratory.
  • Instructs students with respect to safety procedures.
  • Supervises students in the laboratory, ensuring compliance with safety procedures and VTEC Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Supports students in the practice of essential skills during and outside of regularly scheduled laboratory times.
  • Supports students in the set up for live-animal labs prior to regularly scheduled laboratory times.
  • Develops and implements strategies to facilitate student learning.

2. Evaluation of Student Work and Performance

  • Evaluates student work and performance in relation to laboratory requirements.
  • Evaluates written work submitted by students.
  • Evaluates and provides verbal and written feedback on the performance of students in the lab in relation to essential skill requirements of courses.
  • Assesses and assigns final laboratory grades in conjunction with VTEC faculty.
  • Provides additional assistance to students, outside of regularly scheduled laboratory times, in relation to course work.
  • Invigilates and marks mid-term and final lab exams, and may assist faculty with invigilation of final exams when required.
  • Sets and assesses lab questionnaires, subject to the approval of the Dean.
  • Formulates staff schedule and lab exam schedules, subject to the approval of the Dean.

3. Preparation of Materials for Use in the Laboratory

  • Prepares materials for use in the laboratory, subject to the curricula approval of the VTEC faculty, including using multimedia computer applications.
  • Gathers, prepares, and sets out materials, supplies, and equipment for each lab.
  • Actively seeks and assesses new information and determines its relative value in relation to facilitating student learning in the laboratory.
  • Sets up and maintains simulation models according to manufacturers' recommendations.
  • Obtains and prepares companion animal cadavers for use in lab; arranges for post-lab cremation pick up.
  • Sets and evaluates laboratory quizzes and exams in conjunction with VTEC faculty.
  • Maintains and updates handouts and arranges for printing of laboratory manuals.
  • Creates and/or initiates the development of supplementary instructional materials such as instructional videos, posters, information sheets, etc.
  • Researches, designs, and writes experiments for student use.
  • Cares for, and ensures the safety of, companion and laboratory animals (owned and shelter-acquired) utilized in labs.

4. Other Related Duties

  • Creates, maintains, and updates report sheets.
  • Maintains records of VTEC laboratory grades.
  • Sets up laboratory equipment and demonstrations.
  • Ensures equipment is in good working order and performs daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance according to manufacturers' recommendations.
  • Participates as a discipline member in the revision of laboratory materials and manuals.
  • Maintains currency with respect to VTEC and VTEC laboratory instruction.
  • Arranges acquisition, transportation, and preparation of patients (owned and shelter-acquired) for student labs.
  • Ensures appropriate follow-up on patient lab results and disseminates completed patient files to shelters or pet owners.
  • Maintains a practicum site list and facilitates relationships between students and practicum sites.
  • Formulates students' scheduling in lab roles as well as cleaning and husbandry duties.
  • Manages inventory, audits, and maintains logs of Narcotics and other Controlled drugs as directed by the VTEC Lab Supervisor.

To Be Successful in this Role

  • You will need a Diploma in Animal Health/Veterinary Technology from a CVMA/AVMA accredited Animal Health/Veterinary Technology Program combined with a passing grade on the Veterinarian Technician's National Examination (VTNE) and ongoing membership in the British Columbia Veterinary Technologists Association.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience working in a veterinary medical facility.
  • Excellent working knowledge of the operation and routine maintenance of a veterinary facility, including laboratory, surgical, radiology, and anesthetic equipment and apparatus together with a good working knowledge of safety measures related to the operation of a veterinary facility including WHMIS and GHS.
  • Demonstrated experience speaking to groups and preparing written materials for lab assignments. Experience creating Standard Operating Procedures is an asset.
  • Good working knowledge of the English language (written and verbal).
  • A demonstrated ability to handle different animal species compassionately and with the use of accepted professional best practices.
  • Perform all duties of a veterinary technologist, including, but not limited to, anesthesia, dentistry, nursing, radiography, and laboratory procedures.
  • Manage multiple ongoing patient and student needs (i.e. multi-task).
  • Adapt to changing situations with a calm demeanor.
  • Communicate courteously and effectively in person, in writing, and over the telephone with students, faculty, administrators, staff, and the public.
  • Maintain current knowledge in the field of animal health.
  • Work independently under minimum direct supervision, as well as establish priorities and achieve deadlines.
  • Maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Effectively demonstrate proper veterinary technology skills and techniques.
