Data Protection and Cybersecurity Legal Expert

The Senior Counsel will play a critical role in our Litigation and Global Privacy and Cybersecurity legal teams. This individual will report to the VP & Head of Litigation with a matrix reporting line to Chief Counsel Privacy and Cybersecurity, providing an opportunity to interact with numerous partners across Manulife and the broader Global Privacy Office.
Job SummaryWe are seeking a highly skilled Data Protection and Cybersecurity Legal Expert to join our team. As a key member of our Litigation and Global Privacy and Cybersecurity legal teams, you will be responsible for coordinating and leading all aspects of litigation and regulatory investigations related to privacy and cybersecurity.
You will collaborate with business partners and legal colleagues on complex privacy, data, and cybersecurity issues. Additionally, you will partner with Regulatory and Public Affairs colleagues and participate in industry consultations. Your expertise will be essential in acting as incident response counsel for security and privacy incidents, including outreach to third parties and service providers and advising on regulatory notification requirements.
Responsibilities- Coordinating and leading all aspects of litigation and regulatory investigations related to privacy and cybersecurity.
- Collaborating and advising business partners and legal colleagues on complex privacy, data, and cybersecurity issues.
- Partnering with Regulatory and Public Affairs colleagues and participating in industry consultations.
- Acting as incident response counsel for security and privacy incidents, including outreach to third parties and service providers and advising on regulatory notification requirements.
- Reviewing, drafting, and advising on contracts, data protection agreements, and security schedules.
- Creating, developing, and advising on templates, playbooks, scalable frameworks, and processes.
- Serving as counsel to segment and global cybersecurity teams, including cyber threat intelligence, cybersecurity operations, and global information risk management.
- You have an LLB or J.D. and are a member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario, another province or territory of Canada, with a minimum of 6 years post-call experience practicing law with significant expertise and ability to advise on privacy and cybersecurity matters.
- Membership in at least one U.S. state bar will be considered an asset.
- You have excellent analytical, interpretive, and research skills.
- You have a consistent record of successfully advising on sophisticated litigation, privacy, and cybersecurity issues and in a timely way.
- You have a positive, collaborative spirit and keen interest in continued learning.
- You are flexible and can prioritize and make risk-based decisions in a fast-paced environment.
- You work strategically and exercise good judgment.
- You optimally engage and influence others - building positive relationships with our business and legal partners across the organization.
- You optimally and clearly communicate sophisticated legal and technical concepts (written and spoken).
- You have experience or are keen to gain experience as privacy and/or cybersecurity incident response counsel, including providing advice on regulatory reporting requirements and litigation risks.

Estimated Salary Range$114,730.00 CAD - $213,070.00 CAD per year. The actual salary will vary depending on local market conditions, geography, and relevant job-related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience, and education/training.
