About the Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Arborist Professional to join our Parks Department in North Vancouver. As a skilled manual tree hazard mitigation expert, you will be responsible for pruning and removing District trees while ensuring the safety of all workers and the public.

Job Responsibilities
  • Climb, remove, prune and chip coniferous and deciduous trees using ropes, safety harness, power saws and other hand tools and machinery
  • Perform heavy manual duties related to the work, including cutting or removing trees using appropriate rigging, winching and cutting techniques
  • Plant, stake, fertilize and mulch trees as well as report indications of hazardous trees, tree pests and diseases to a superior
  • Operate a truck and chipper to transport materials to and from the work site
Requirements
  1. Thorough knowledge of methods, practices, tools and equipment used in pruning and removal of deciduous and coniferous trees
  2. Considerable knowledge of equipment, methods, procedures and safety precautions involved in arboriculture work
  3. Ability to safely perform SRS, MRS, and spurred climbing techniques at considerable heights above the ground
  4. Skill in the use of rigging ropes and associated hardware
  5. Ability to provide work direction to others, receive direction and work effectively in a team environment
  6. Ability to exercise proper safety precautions in the performance of work
  7. Skill in the use of a variety of hand and power tools used in tree pruning and removal work
  8. Skill in the operation of a chipper
  9. Excellent communication skills when dealing with co-workers and the public on sensitive matters
  10. Sound knowledge in native and non-native tree species identification and profiles
  11. Ability to respond to after-hours emergencies if support is required from a superior
Qualifications
  • Completion of grade 12 schooling supplemented by post-secondary or other recognized courses related to arboriculture/urban forestry
  • Considerable related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • OFA Level 1, recognized chainsaw certification, ISA certification (or equivalent) and relevant SkilledTradesBC certification (or equivalent) would be considered an asset
  • A valid Class 5 BC Driver's License is required
Compensation Package

The hourly rate for this full-time unionized position is approximately $49.50 per hour, based on a 40-hour work week, reflecting the competitive total compensation package offered by the District of North Vancouver.
