Qualifications and Requirements

Island Health is seeking a qualified individual to fill the role of Psychiatric Rehabilitation Worker. The ideal candidate will possess a Grade 12 graduation, supplemented by post-secondary courses dealing with mental illness. A minimum of two years recent related experience working with persons with mental disorders, including teaching life skills, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience is required. Certificates in CPR and Food Safe are also necessary. Knowledge of the Mental Health Act as it applies to the rights and obligations of clients and staff in the facility is essential. Understanding of the principles of psychosocial rehabilitation/recovery model, using a client-centered approach is also required.

Key Skills and Abilities
  • Effective communication and writing skills, with the ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to develop and maintain rapport with clients, enabling them to understand their illness and the rehabilitation process.
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to employ aggressive behaviour management techniques.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making skills, with the ability to exercise judgment in keeping with program philosophy, when a supervisor is unavailable for consultation.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
  • Valid BC Driver's Licence and, if required, ability to obtain a class 4 Driver's License.
