About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior RF Systems Engineer to join our team at Telesat Canada. As a key member of our Lightspeed System Engineering team, you will be responsible for defining the performance requirements of our satellite communication system.

Main Responsibilities
  • System Simulation and Modeling: Develop and maintain accurate models of our terrestrial and in-orbit communication systems to ensure optimal performance.
  • Collaboration with Cross-Functional Teams: Work closely with system architects, RF engineers, antenna engineers, and other stakeholders to define the architecture and partition functions between hardware and software domains.
  • RF Link Performance Analysis: Develop strategies for modeling RF link performance, accounting for impairments through various system elements.
  • Specification Development: Derive top-level specifications for RF links and RF and antenna subsystems.
  • System Performance Characterization: Analyze system performance and develop and maintain performance budgets.
  • Technical Support: Provide technical expertise to regulatory, coordination, and market access teams.
Requirements
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or other engineering discipline, or Master's degree or PhD in electrical engineering with emphasis in RF/microwave circuits or communication theory.
  • Experience: At least 5 years of relevant experience in RF communication systems.
  • Technical Skills: Knowledge of digital communication systems, spread spectrum, single and multi-carrier techniques, modulation types such as PSK, APSK, QAM, and experience with modulation standards such as DVB-S2X and DVB-RCS2, as well as Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM) methods.
  • Tools and Software: Good experience in MATLAB or other tools for modeling and analyzing RF communication systems.
Specialized Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Analysis and Simulation: Experience performing analysis and simulation of communication systems.
  • RF Components: Thorough understanding of RF passive and active components.
  • Active Antenna Technologies: Good understanding of active antenna beam forming technologies, including digital beam forming, and fast beam hopping.
  • Radio Performance: Experience characterizing radio performance at microwave frequencies, including rain fade and its effects on the communication links.
  • RF Transceiver Architectures: Knowledge of RF transceiver architectures and digital communication theory.
