Role Overview

As a key member of Pomerleau's Building Operations team, the Chief Estimator will contribute to the success of new and ongoing projects by providing expert preconstruction services.

Working on large-scale building and infrastructure projects, the successful candidate will collaborate with the proposals team and client groups to secure bids and ensure project success.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Lead the preconstruction phase of local projects, working closely with project stakeholders to develop comprehensive project plans, schedules, and budgets.
  2. Conduct detailed quantity takeoffs, cost estimates, and value engineering analyses to optimize project scope and budget.
  3. Manage the bidding process, including soliciting bids from subcontractors and vendors, evaluating proposals, and negotiating contracts.
  4. Review bid documents, specifications, and drawings to ensure accuracy and compliance with project requirements.
  5. Serve as a primary point of contact for clients during the preconstruction phase, addressing inquiries, providing updates on project progress, and presenting cost-saving alternatives.
  6. Collaborate with clients, architects, engineers, and other stakeholders to establish project goals, objectives, and design criteria.
  7. Supervise and mentor a team of estimators, providing guidance and support throughout the preconstruction process.
  8. Foster a collaborative and innovative team environment focused on achieving excellence in preconstruction services.
  9. Identify and assess potential risks and opportunities associated with construction projects, developing strategies to mitigate risks and maximize project success.
  10. Conduct thorough risk analyses and feasibility studies to inform decision-making and project planning.
  11. Implement process improvements and innovative solutions to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and competitiveness in preconstruction services.

Requirements

  1. Bachelor's degree or College Diploma in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architecture, or related field.
  2. 5+ years of experience in preconstruction management, or lead estimation role with a focus on building and infrastructure construction projects.
  3. A knack for working with construction estimating software, project management tools, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  4. Analyzing and problem-solving is what you do best Your attention to detail and accuracy is like no other.

Additional Assets

  • Professional certifications such as Professional Quantity Surveyor (PQS) or Project Management Professional (PMP).
  • Previous experience working on design-build, construction management at-risk (CMAR), or public-private partnership (P3) project delivery methods.
  • Familiarity with sustainable construction practices and green building certifications.
  • A fluency in both French and English (written and oral).
