Job Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled Sign Language Facilitator to join our team at Rocky View Schools. The successful candidate will work closely with teachers and students to facilitate communication and support diverse learning needs.

About the Role:

This is a full-time (30 hours/week) position starting immediately at Cochrane Christian Academy. The successful candidate will require a Level III Signing Certification to meet the needs of the students they will be assisting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist students individually by facilitating communication between the student, their hearing peers, the classroom teacher, school administration, parents and staff within the school environment.
  • Prepare for interpreting by becoming familiar with course information and technical language.
  • Maintain an active membership with the provincial and national interpreting organizations and abide by the AVLIC Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Professional Conduct.
  • Reinforce strategies as directed by the teacher(s) and identified in Personalized Learning Plan (PLP), Individualized Program Plans (IPP), Behaviour Support Plans (BSP), safety plans, and medical plans, in programming for the diverse needs of the students.
  • Implement behaviour management strategies for students as needed.
  • Contribute to the achievement of students' educational goals and objectives by working with the teacher to create a positive, safe, and optimal learning environment.

Requirements:

  • Graduate from a recognized ASL-English interpreting program.
  • Educational Assistant Certificate or a certificate from a related field.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Understanding of language implications on the education of deaf and hard of hearing students and competency in adapting to various signing styles along the communication continuum.
  • Experience working or interacting with d/Deaf and hard of hearing persons, especially children.
  • Knowledge of the basic principles of educational practices, the function of support services, and the role of interpreters as part of an educational team.
  • Minimum one year experience of interpreting experience preferred.

Salary Range: $23.87-$29.00 hourly rate (effective December 2, 2024). An additional allowance shall be paid per bi-weekly pay period, provided you meet the Level III signing qualifications.
