The Economic Development Officer plays a crucial role for Walpole Island First Nation, providing leadership in economic development initiatives undertaken on behalf of the Nation. The position requires a broad general knowledge of business and government coupled with an ability to handle various projects and tasks that must be completed within specified deadlines.

This includes attending meetings and being available outside ordinary business hours, including evenings and weekends, and maintaining regular monthly office hours. The ideal candidate will have three or more years of experience in business or economic development and excellent project management skills.

The main responsibilities of this position include:

  • Evaluating, planning, executing economic policy, and enhancing economic development initiatives
  • Working with the Economic Development Committee and staff, Chief & Council, community groups, industry stakeholders, government officials, labour leaders, First Nation communities, and the public to identify and promote development and diversification opportunities for Walpole Island First Nation
  • Developing a multi-year Strategic Plan and Business Plan for Walpole Island First Nation based on input from the members of the community, the public, and the Chief & Council
  • Providing advocacy and synergy to new business owners/investors, industry, community services, and organizations; liaising with regional, provincial, and federal government bodies as well as colleagues throughout the province to share information, access resources, and streamline delivery of service to the community

This position also involves assessing 'investment readiness' and the development or updates of investment readiness products and profiles. Additionally, the successful candidate will provide economic and business development information to interest groups, local government, other levels of government, and business development proponents, support the efforts of the community in its lobbying for community development, and identify and assess information that could have a significant economic impact on the community.

The salary for this position is approximately $75,000 - $100,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications.
