Job Summary

The City of Ottawa is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Engineer to join our Infrastructure Projects team. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for managing total project delivery using in-house and/or external resources for major infrastructure construction and rehabilitation projects.

You will oversee all phases of the project delivery, from project inception through consultant selection, public consultation, pre-design, detailed design, approvals, tendering, and award, to construction. Your responsibilities will include monitoring, tracking, and reporting on project status, approving all project expenditures, arranging all project-related testing, and handling commissioning/turnover to operating branches.

Assignments will involve major or multiple projects that are highly complex, of multi-million dollar value, frequently having numerous stakeholders, and may require extensive public consultation and environmental assessment and may extend over multiple years.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage concurrent complex, multi-million dollar, and often highly sensitive projects and bring them to completion according to schedule and within budget.
  • Manage activities of technical staff, consultants, contractors, and coordinate activities with other levels of governments and external agencies/utilities.
  • Prepare formal RFQs and RFPs; review, analyze, and recommend acceptance of proposals from consulting engineering firms.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing to internal councillor inquiries and inquiries/complaints from the general public and to present technical material in formats conducive to various audiences.
  • Identify and recommend solutions to health and safety issues and problems to ensure the safety of employees and contractors and to mitigate loss/project downtime.

Requirements
  • Completion of a 4-year degree in Engineering or Applied Science.
  • Minimum of 8 years of professional experience in the planning, design, and construction of municipal infrastructure, including a minimum of 5 years of project management experience.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
Language Requirements

English oral, reading, writing; Designated Bilingual – specific level of language proficiency: French: oral, reading, writing English: oral, reading, writing.

Driver's License Requirement

A valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver's license (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated.
