Indigenous Student Advocate

We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Indigenous Student Advocate to join our team at School District #23 (Central Okanagan). As an advocate, you will play a vital role in supporting Indigenous students to succeed in school and beyond.
Job Summary:The Indigenous Student Advocate will work closely with classroom teachers, support staff, and school administration to provide cultural and academic support to Indigenous students. This includes monitoring attendance, facilitating improved attendance, and providing emotional, social, and academic support to students.
Key Responsibilities:- Provide cultural and academic support to Indigenous students
- Monitor attendance and facilitate improved attendance
- Work closely with teachers and support staff to plan effectively for students
- Provide links between home and school
- Work with school administration to improve Indigenous student academic achievement and increase awareness and knowledge of Indigenous culture
- Successful completion of Grade 12 (Senior Secondary School Graduation)
- Two (2) years community College or University program, with courses in Indigenous Studies, Psychology, Sociology, Human Service Worker, or equivalent
- Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous students and their parents
- Demonstrated ability to work as a team member
- Good understanding of Indigenous Culture and ability to model cultural teachings
- Interest in, and desire to work with, students and their academic, social and emotional needs
- Ability to relate to students in an empathetic, respectful, and consistent manner
- Indigenous ancestry (Metis, First Nations, or Inuit)
- Demonstrated knowledge of, and commitment to, Indigenous culture and ancestry
- Hourly wage rate of $33.53
- Typically working 7 hours per day during school months
- Casual or temporary advocates without seniority will receive 5% of bi-weekly earnings in lieu of vacation
- Permanent full-time 10-month positions with 35hrs/week and comprehensive employee benefit package
