Main Responsibilities

The Environmental Protection Technician (Landfill Gas Maintenance Technician) is a key role in the City of Vancouver's Transfer and Landfill Operations department. The successful candidate will be responsible for the efficient operation of the landfill gas control system at the Vancouver Landfill in Delta.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct landfill gas well field monitoring, including data logging for the well field, manifolds, and flaring station.
  • Perform routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibration of instruments used for monitoring, including Landtec GEM5000 and personal gas monitors.
  • Install, operate, and maintain the landfill gas well field leachate pumping system.
  • Conduct routine field monitoring, including liquid levels, temperature probes, pipeline inspection camera operation, and data interpretation.
  • Perform routine and reactive maintenance on all field equipment related to the landfill gas system.
  • Analyze, interpret, and present data to other Environmental Protection Technicians and landfill management staff, including identification of trends or anomalies and recommendations for follow-on work.
  • Liaise with contractors or other City forces and consultants who provide contracting and professional services with respect to the operation of the system.
  • Conduct landfill gas data management and analysis using specialized data management software.
  • Read, review, and update safe operating procedures related to landfill gas tasks.
  • Conduct presentations and tours of the landfill and/or landfill gas system as needed for staff and members of the public.
  • Participate in standby rotations and respond to callouts to maintain flare station operation after-hours.
  • Backfill for GPS survey technicians for minimal periods.
  • Backfill for other Environmental Protection Technicians during vacation or absence.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will require:

  • Completion of a program in Environmental Protection Technology, Environmental Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Member of, or eligible for, membership in the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC (ASTTBC) or equivalent.
Working Conditions

This role requires working outdoors in all weather conditions for extended periods of time. You will also be required to perform physical work and use hand tools and handheld power tools.
