Purpose:

As a Respiratory Therapist at Sault Area Hospital, you will play a vital role in the treatment of patients with respiratory problems. You will work closely with medical and nursing personnel to determine the most suitable method of administering inhalants and procedures in accordance with doctors' orders. Your attention to detail and ability to respond to cardiac arrests will be crucial in ensuring the best possible patient outcomes.

Duties:

  • Perform diagnostic tests, such as arterial blood gas analysis and cardiopulmonary function tests, to assess patients' respiratory health.
  • Initiate, maintain, and monitor patients requiring invasive and noninvasive ventilation, ensuring their safety and comfort.
  • Operate and monitor respiratory equipment to administer treatments such as oxygen, oxygen-air mixtures, or medications, following established protocols.
  • Assess patients and perform or assist with interventions such as airway maintenance, arterial line insertions, and intubations, demonstrating your expertise and professionalism.
  • Participate in the Code Blue/Pink response team, performing basic and advanced airway management as needed.
  • Assist with the transport of high-risk adult, pediatric, and neonate patients, ensuring their safety and well-being.
  • Attend high-risk infant deliveries in the hospital, providing expert care and support.
  • Assist physicians with bronchoscopy, demonstrating your ability to work collaboratively with the medical team.
  • Maintain current knowledge of best practices and benchmarks for the delivery of services, staying up-to-date with research, literature, accreditation requirements, policy, and legislative requirements.
  • Comply with organizational policies, procedures, and standards, upholding the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate of a recognized Respiratory Therapy program – 3 year diploma.
  • Current registration with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario in good standing.

Knowledge, Skill & Ability:

  • Knowledge of department, organization, and professional standards, as well as relevant legislation, such as RHPA and Respiratory Therapy Act (RTA).
  • Excellent customer service, interpersonal, and telephone skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
  • Computer literacy in a Microsoft environment, with the ability to navigate and utilize relevant software and systems.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively, with strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently as a team member in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to adapt to changing situations and priorities.
  • Ability to maintain successful working relationships with the interdisciplinary team to achieve positive patient outcomes.
  • Ability to organize time effectively, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple responsibilities.
  • Ability to meet and interact with people in a pleasant, professional, responsible, and reassuring manner, upholding the highest standards of customer service and care.
