Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and culturally sensitive Mental Health Specialist to join our team at Island Health. As a key member of our Indigenous Access program, you will work closely with Indigenous communities to provide mental health services that are tailored to their unique needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide mental health services to Indigenous clients, including assessment, treatment, and crisis intervention.
  • Work collaboratively with Indigenous communities to develop and implement culturally safe mental health programs.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with Indigenous organizations and service providers to ensure seamless service delivery.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary teams to provide comprehensive care to Indigenous clients.
  • Stay up-to-date with best practices in Indigenous mental health and cultural safety.
Requirements
  • Baccalaureate degree in a health-related discipline from an approved post-secondary institution.
  • Recognized post-basic education related to mental illness and/or alcohol and drug addiction.
  • Minimum two years of experience working within or with Indigenous communities.
  • Two years of recent related experience in areas requiring understanding of trauma in the context of Indigenous people.
  • Valid BC Driver's License.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to work within VIHA's framework and standards within rehabilitation/recovery, harm reduction focused model.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and clinical skills, including crisis intervention, stabilization, de-escalation, and brief psychotherapy.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of support services and resources within respective geography available for Indigenous clients.
  • Knowledge of the significance of culture in relation to individual, family, and community health services.
  • Demonstrated a basic knowledge of health and wellness services available on Vancouver Island for Indigenous clients (First Nation, Metis, Inuit).
  • Demonstrated an understanding of Canadian colonization, Indigenous specific racism, and its impact on the current health and wellness of Indigenous Peoples.
  • Knowledge of the significance to provision of culturally safe health care engagements and environments for Indigenous Peoples.
