Job Summary

The Control and Automation Lead role is a critical position in the development of our factories to World Class standards. This involves creating automated systems in a fast-paced manufacturing environment with utmost adherence to Unilever standards. The successful candidate will work closely with different departments and the Plant leadership team to determine existing automation capabilities and future automation capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the site engineering manager in finalizing electrical and controls scope for new projects, adhering to Unilever engineering standards.
  • Assist the site engineering manager in creating RFQ for new projects.
  • Oversee electrical and controls contractors during project implementation.
  • Play a critical role in delivering site CAPEX and other engineering projects on time and in full.
  • Work closely with project engineers and other mechanical contractors in seamless execution of projects.
  • Establish ideal line balancing for new projects and improve line balancing for existing lines.
  • Identify and create a time-based phasing out plan for obsolete PLC and control systems with least impact to plant operations.
  • Work closely with the site chief engineer to improve utility control systems.
  • Assist in net zero and energy conservation initiatives.
  • Assist the UMS team in upgrading the site SCADA system (DFOS).
  • Design, build, and program packaging and processing equipment, automated conveyors, communication networks, CIP systems, and utility controls.
  • Set up and adjust operating parameters in VFDs, servos, and other instrumentation using vendor software and/or PLC programs.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable provincial and federal regulations.
  • Create and update all plant electrical control schematics, PLC, and HMI programs.
  • Help create the edit log for all PLC programs.
  • Lead and support additional projects and tasks as required.
  • Coach and mentor plant electricians in their further development in PLC and process instrumentation troubleshooting skills.
  • Support other departments and plant initiatives as needed.
  • Continuously improve control reliability of existing and new projects.
  • Work closely with the site category engineer to deliver category innovation projects.
  • Play a critical supporting role in line modifications and Focus Improvement initiatives to ensure timely delivery of all critical actions based on current losses.
  • Serve on a Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) team as assigned.
  • Manage industrial networks.
  • Develop automation standards/standardize installation parts.
  • Train technical staff in new technologies.
  • Act as site liaison to the IT department.
  • Lead site Cyber Security.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in technology, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Technical Trades License (309 or 442A) with equivalent experience.
  • 5-7 years general industrial manufacturing experience, preferably in a food environment in a similar capacity.
  • Strong experience with Rockwell software (5/500/5000), Factory Talk View, Allen Bradley VFD (Power flex and 525 series).
  • Experience with Allen-Bradley PLC systems, Schnieder, and Siemens PLC platforms.
  • Strong experience with Allen-Bradley, Bosch-Rexroth, and Schneider Motion controllers.
  • Strong experience with automated conveyor systems and process instrumentation, including tuning of PID controllers.
  • Good knowledge of Canadian Electrical Code, CUL, and CSA requirements, as well as in-depth knowledge of the Regulation.
  • Ability to work in a multi-functional team environment.
  • Excellent personal communication skills.
  • Flexibility with schedule and hours.
  • Familiarity with GMP/ISO/Audits is an asset.
  • Total Productive Maintenance (TPM)/World Class Manufacturing (WCM) experience is preferred; continuous improvement experience is also preferred.
  • CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership, facilitation, coaching, and organization skills. Strong written and oral communication skills.
