Senior Microbiology Laboratory Technician

About the Role
The Microbiology Supervisor is a key member of the Winnipeg management team, responsible for overseeing the analytical operations of the microbiology laboratory. This role involves supervising staff, managing day-to-day operations, and ensuring the laboratory meets quality control and turnaround time standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise staff and assign workloads to ensure productivity targets are met or exceeded;
- Oversee staff scheduling to ensure adequate coverage while managing costs;
- Conduct interviews, onboard new employees, and recommend disciplinary actions or performance improvement plans as needed;
- Manage human resources within the department, including recruiting, performance management, employee relations, attendance, and promotion;
- Coordinate and provide training for the team as needed;
- Complete annual performance reviews for employees;
- Maintain inventory of supplies and consumables to support operations while ensuring efficiency;
- Ensure maintenance and preventative maintenance schedules are followed;
- Prepare and maintain production reports and statistics;
- Maintain ALS quality management system requirements (QMS) for the department;
- Perform detailed data review, interpretation, and processing;
- Ensure methodologies and accreditation requirements are met and documented;
- Participate in internal and external audits for the department and ensure timely resolution of any findings;
- Conduct regular crew talks to discuss safety, quality, process changes, management issues, and corporate communications;
- Review procedures and processes and provide input on their quality and reliability;
- Liaise with other departments to respond to client inquiries, address production issues, and resolve client service concerns;
- Use correct methods in accordance with established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;
- Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;
- Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
- Degree in Microbiology or related field;
- Minimum 6 years of experience in operating and maintaining analytical chemistry instrumentation for a variety of methods;
- Experience working with ISO/IEC 17025 or similar International Standardization systems for laboratory operation;
- Minimum 3 years of experience leading a team in a laboratory setting;
- Strong computer skills, including MS Excel and MS Word;
Physical Demands:
- Able to lift up to 50lbs;
- Able to stand for a full shift;
- Able to sit at a desk and do general office work, which includes periodic sedentary responsibilities;
- Possess manual dexterity to perform repetitive tasks;
- Please note that ALS operates 24/7 and will require day, afternoon, and graveyard shift work, including weekends.
