London, Ontario, Canada International Institute for Sustainable Development Full time
Job Description:

IISD Experimental Lakes Area (IISD-ELA) is a world-renowned freshwater research facility featuring 58 small lakes and their watersheds in northwestern Ontario, Canada. For over five decades, scientists at IISD-ELA have conducted groundbreaking whole-ecosystem experiments, yielding significant discoveries related to pressing issues such as acid rain, mercury from air pollution, algal blooms, and pharmaceutical chemicals in water.

The facility operates under the International Institute for Sustainable Development, an independent think tank headquartered in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on Treaty 1 territory, the traditional land of Anishinaabeg, Cree, Ojibwe-Cree, Dakota, and Dene Peoples, and homeland of the Métis Nation. IISD-ELA acknowledges that its research facility is located on Treaty 3 lands, with the care of these lands during experimentation and restoration to their original state implicit in its mission. Many regional schools visit the facility to learn about aquatic ecosystems.

The incumbent will lead/coordinate research at IISD-ELA focusing on plastics (pELAstic project, preliminary work in Africa) and applied research/education activities informing plastic pollution policy. Tasks involve managing daily field and analytical activities for the pELAstics whole-ecosystem project at the IISD-ELA research station. This includes overseeing human and financial resources, scientific equipment, and collecting, quality-assuring/control-maintaining, and analyzing scientific data. A substantial portion of duties will occur at the IISD-ELA research station, situated in northwestern Ontario, where the incumbent will live and work for extended periods. They will operate trucks, all-terrain vehicles, small boats, and snowmobiles while working well in a team environment. During the remainder of the year, the researcher will primarily work from the head office in Winnipeg or a hybrid environment between the head office and home, engaging in tasks such as data analysis and management, website updates, coordinating sample analyses with external contractors, ordering/maintaining equipment/supplies, and managing research budgets. The scientist may also lead/coordinate projects in Winnipeg aiming to increase waste literacy and reduce plastic pollution. They may make occasional trips to the IISD-ELA research facility during the offseason to assist with winter surveys or other research activities.

This role involves:
- Organizing and leading field and analytical programs for the pELAstics Project at the remote IISD-ELA research station in Northwestern Ontario.
- Supervising seasonal research assistants.
- Collaborating with the IISD policy team and the U of T Trash Team on joint projects/research.
- Preparing/reviewing manuscripts and supporting communications/education programming.

Detailed responsibilities include:
- Leading plastic-related research at IISD-ELA, including recovery of L378 and other potential projects.
- Conducting fieldwork around Winnipeg/Manitoba/Kenora (e.g., Interviews related to plastic pollution, trash traps, etc.).
- Traveling to other locations for fieldwork (e.g., Rwanda).

Science-to-Policy Responsibilities:
- Science communication (e.g., policy briefs).
- Collaborating with the IISD policy team and U of T Trash Team.
- Plastic emissions reduction projects (e.g., Foodware project, trash traps).

Data Analysis and Writing:
- Preparing/reviewing manuscripts.
- Data visualization and analysis.
- Presenting data at conferences/workshops.

Outreach:
- Providing presentations to student groups, communities, and stakeholders.
- Mentoring students in collaboration with the Education and Relations team.
- Speaking to the media about research on plastic pollution and policy at IISD-ELA.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
- Based at the IISD-ELA research station during the field season from April to October and office-based, hybrid or remote from November to April. IISD-ELA provides on-site living accommodations and food.
- Regularly transitioning between office, lab, and field environments.
- Depending on workload/deadlines, may require flexibility in working hours.
- Potential for periods of high workload, requiring efficient time management/adaptability.

Physical Demands:
- Time spent at the IISD-ELA research station involves fieldwork involving manual labor, such as hiking, lifting heavy objects up to 20 kgs, etc.
- Exposure to work outdoors in various weather conditions, involving exposure to sun, rain, snow, and cold temperatures.

Requirements:

- Experience with collecting/analyzing samples for water quality, phytoplankton, and invertebrates.
- Excellent communication skills, oral/written.
- Experience operating watercraft and field vehicles, including small boats and motors, light trucks, all-terrain vehicles, and snowmobiles.
