About the Position:

The BC SPCA is seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Animal Care Supervisor to join our team. As a key member of our shelter operations, you will play a critical role in ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of animals in our care.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist the Animal Centre Manager in maintaining optimal welfare standards in the shelter, adhering to ShelterSense programs and related BC SPCA policies.
  • Ensure the health and welfare needs of all animals are actively managed, and assist in timely decision-making regarding their physical, mental, and behavioral health and welfare.
  • Train staff and volunteers on ShelterSense programs, ensuring all animal interactions are conducted safely and humanely.
  • Assist in the implementation and maintenance of all BC SPCA programs, policies, and procedures in the shelter.
  • Recruit and select a high-performing team of shelter staff and volunteers, adhering to the Society's approved recruitment process.
  • Provide ongoing training, direction, motivation, and coaching to shelter staff and volunteers, focusing on celebrating successes and achievements.
  • Conduct regular reviews of shelter staff and volunteers, ensuring retention and promoting opportunities for growth and development.
  • Oversee the implementation of high customer service standards, monitoring overall customer satisfaction in the Animal Centre.
  • Ensure the physical facility, equipment, and supplies are maintained in a condition acceptable to the Society.
  • Ensure animals are treated humanely, with compassion and concern, and in a manner consistent with the BC SPCA's five freedoms.
  • Ensure animals' health and well-being are maintained in accordance with BC SPCA policies and procedures, including the administration of approved medications and related supplies.
  • Report any health or welfare concerns to the Manager or designate.
  • Assist with conducting contractual animal control duties, as required.
  • Conduct preliminary cruelty investigations and submit findings for further investigation.
  • Act as a champion of the BC SPCA Health & Safety program, ensuring safe work practices are implemented and maintained.
  • Assist in completing administrative duties, including data entry, scheduling, and payroll submissions.
  • Collaborate with local Special Provincial Constables to ensure an effective response to cruelty investigations.
  • Assist in preparing an annual budget for the Animal Centre, ensuring compliance with approved budget guidelines.
  • Oversee all Animal Centre functions in the absence of the Animal Centre Manager.
  • Act as an ambassador of the BC SPCA, ensuring customer and community relations are consistently professional and positive.
  • Perform reception duties, including greeting the public, answering phones, and responding to emails.
  • Assist with adoptions, redemptions, and intake of animals, ensuring all procedures are conducted according to procedure.
  • Assess suitability of potential adoptive customers, ensuring the best possible match between adopter and animal.
  • Support and implement BC SPCA provincial initiatives and adhere to all operational policies and procedures.
  • Assist in local and provincial fund-raising initiatives.
  • Review inventory of shelter supplies, ensuring timely ordering and restocking.
  • Ensure the security of the building, including locking doors and gates as required.
  • Operate the Animal Centre vehicle, transporting animals to and from the veterinarian clinic, and maintaining vehicle cleanliness and maintenance.
  • Collaborate with other staff and volunteers to enhance the health and welfare of shelter animals and create a harmonious team environment.
  • Participate in meetings to share ideas and suggestions for improving the enjoyment of working for the BC SPCA and increasing productivity.
Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Class N or 5 BC Drivers' License and driver's abstract.
  • A sound knowledge of animals, their breeds, characteristics, and common diseases.
  • Previous kennel or animal care experience is considered an asset.
  • Previous leadership or supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrable interest in all aspects of animal welfare.
  • Ability to work with other staff, volunteers, and the public in a positive, practical manner, with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to prioritize demands on time.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and organizational skills.
  • Basic computer skills sufficient to deal effectively with front desk duties.
  • Position is physically demanding, requiring heavy lifting, pushing, and pulling, and an individual with the ability to maintain a level of fitness and endurance to fulfill required duties.
  • Minimum of three years animal care experience with the BC SPCA or equivalent agency is preferred.
  • Completion and demonstrated competency in the following BC SPCA courses upon hire (preferred), or within 6 months of hire.
