Physician - Youth Health Specialist

About the Role:
We are seeking an experienced physician to provide comprehensive, trauma-informed medical care to youth aged 12 to 24. The ideal candidate will have a passion for advocating and building relationships with hard-to-engage youth, and a commitment to addressing the complex physical and psychosocial challenges faced by this population.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide full-scope primary care to clients, including infants and children of youth clients, in-person and virtually.
- Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team, including LPNs, mental health clinicians, and social workers, to provide comprehensive care.
- Shadow bill for indirect and direct patient care, and facilitate allied health team members to work to their full scope of practice.
- Remain flexible regarding patient scheduling, including same-day and walk-in appointments.
- Respond to acute concerns, including fluctuating behavior, drug poisoning, and active suicidal ideation.
- Prescribe contraception, insert and remove IUDs, and potentially prescribe OAT and practice addiction medicine.
- Work with clients who bring complex mental health concerns and psychosocial circumstances.
- Attend primary care provider meetings as needed, and complete organization-wide training as required.
Qualifications/Skills:
- Member in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
- Appropriate medical liability insurance coverage.
- Affiliation with a Primary Care Network (PCN) or willingness to join a PCN.
- 2+ years of experience working with youth, vulnerable populations, sexual and reproductive health, and/or LGBTQ2S+ an asset.
- Comfort and experience with prenatal care, addictions medicine, and gender-affirming care in the LGBTQ2S+ community an asset.
- Comfort with pregnancy options discussion, and medical abortion or willingness to train.
- An understanding of the social determinants of health as they pertain to marginalized and underserved populations.
- EMR experience and the ability to use Netcare required.
- Up-to-date CPR training required upon starting at The Alex.
- A satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal record clearance and child welfare intervention check required.
