About the Role:

The University of Toronto is seeking a highly skilled Senior Financial Officer to join our team. As a key member of our financial management team, you will be responsible for overseeing the financial management of budgets, including strategic planning, analysis, and forecasting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Forecasting and planning various departments' budgets to ensure expenditures remain within budgeted allocations
  • Overseeing the financial management of budgets, including strategic planning, analysis, and forecasting
  • Advising academic administrators and staff on accounting practices and University financial policies and procedures
  • Forecasting and planning financial activities incorporating budgets with multiple sources of revenue and/or recoveries
  • Planning and overseeing short and long-range activities that support financial administration
  • Performing complex financial data modeling and analysis
  • Analyzing complex statistical reports and/or financial information for management decision-making
  • Liaising with internal contacts to resolve accounting, payroll, and/or HRIS processing issues

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, or an acceptable combination of education and experience. CPA designation or working towards a designation is preferred.
  • Minimum of five (5) years in financial analysis, planning, and forecasting.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of university budget process, procurement policies, and financial and administrative policies.
  • Experience in complex budgeting and analysis, and interpreting and applying policies and procedures, processing financial transactions, generating financial reports from a financial system, reconciling financial information, and process improvement.
  • Demonstrated experience with HRIS and FIS, or equivalent systems, is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately analyze financial information (budget and actual).
  • Demonstrated experience in financial management. Strong knowledge of financial accounting, reporting, and internal control procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply accounting and budgeting knowledge to resolve financial matters effectively and communicate financial information to individuals with little financial expertise.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and tact, work independently with a high degree of initiative, and work collaboratively.
  • Strong computer skills with a high level of proficiency in spreadsheet applications and a sound knowledge of word processing software, preferably Excel and Word.
  • Superior time management skills, ability to prioritize, and bring the appropriate sense of urgency to situations, and attentive to detail and accuracy; excellent communication (written and verbal) interpersonal and organizational skills.
