Pediatric Nurse Specialist Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Pediatric Nurse Specialist to join our team at Fraser Health. As a key member of our inter-professional care team, you will provide direct patient care to pediatric patients in a pediatric inpatient unit and/or select ambulatory day clinics.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct comprehensive nursing assessments of pediatric patients on admission and at regular intervals.
  • Assess patient needs and collect information from various sources using skills of observation, communication, data review, and physical assessment.
  • Make nursing diagnoses and determine whether conditions can be improved or resolved by appropriate nursing interventions.
  • Identify risk factors and plan, perform, and evaluate nursing interventions and care.
  • Collaborate with patients, families/caregivers, physicians, and members of the inter-professional care team in care planning and delivery.
  • Establish therapeutic relationships by demonstrating empathy, trust, and respect, advocating for patient/family rights to privacy, dignity, and access to information.
  • Participate in care and discharge planning, ensuring effective care plan implementation and updates.
  • Coordinate nursing care, set priorities, assign and delegate tasks to support staff, and make referrals according to established protocols and practice standards.
  • Teach patients and families/caregivers on illness prevention, health restoration, and health maintenance to help patients achieve their healthcare goals.
  • Assess learning needs, provide information and demonstration of care activities, and plan referrals to appropriate healthcare/community agencies.
  • Document assessments, nursing diagnoses, observations, interventions, patient/family responses, outcomes/evaluations, and referrals according to practice standards and Fraser Health procedures.
Requirements:
  • Graduation from an approved School of Nursing.
  • Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • One year's recent, related clinical nursing experience in the designated clinical area and completion of postgraduate coursework and/or certification applicable to the designated clinical area or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Clinical proficiency in the designated clinical area.
  • Ability to complete initial and ongoing patient assessment and apply pediatric nursing theory and expertise to provide nursing care to pediatric patients.
  • Ability to recognize acuity changes, use factual information, and apply research-based evidence/evidence-informed practice to support nursing decisions and actions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families/caregivers, the public, medical staff, and members of the inter-professional care team.
  • Ability to promote person-centered care, demonstrate empathy, and advocate for patient/family rights.
  • Ability to integrate and evaluate data from multiple sources to problem-solve effectively.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work in a continually changing environment.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate with members of the inter-professional care team.
  • Ability to teach and instruct patients, families/caregivers, and community partners on topics essential to their health care and well-being.
  • Ability to deal with and promote change.
  • Ability to operate related equipment, including relevant computer applications.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
