Job Summary

The City of Courtenay is seeking a highly skilled Transportation Technologist to join our team in the Transportation Division of the Operational Services Department. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for providing technical expertise in traffic and transportation engineering, ensuring the safe and efficient movement of people and goods within our community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review and provide technical expertise in traffic and transportation engineering, including road and intersection operational assessments, road safety reviews, and improvements.
  • Oversee and ensure the effective delivery of various traffic programs, such as crosswalk and pedestrian upgrades, traffic data collection, railway crossing safety, and traffic calming initiatives.
  • Administer assigned capital projects, issue permits and street licenses for traffic-related activities, and review and process engineering applications.
  • Coordinate related construction and installation work, and respond to day-to-day traffic operation concerns raised by internal staff, the public, or Council.
Requirements
  • Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology from a recognized educational institution, or equivalent combination of education, training, and related work experience.
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver's License.
  • Eligible for membership in Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC with the designation of AScT or other equivalent.
  • Criminal Record Check.
  • Sound experience (3-4 years) in civil/municipal engineering, specifically related to transportation and traffic management.
  • Some experience (1-2 years) in the use of GIS, AutoCAD, and related software, and survey instruments.
  • Some experience in project management and contract administration.
  • Thorough knowledge of civil engineering principles, terminology, practices, and techniques.
  • Considerable knowledge of infrastructure operation, maintenance, and construction practices.
  • Considerable knowledge of legislated civil construction codes and regulations.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, conflict resolution, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Strong office computer skills.
  • Ability to deal with contractors and engineers in a professional and timely manner.
  • Ability to interpret and apply City and other bylaws, policies, procedures, engineering design standards, and specifications.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team and independently.
  • Physical ability to stand and walk frequently throughout the day, occasionally attend and inspect construction sites, including climbing in and out of ditches and trenches, and ability to frequently work in inclement weather.
What We Offer

The current hourly wage rate is $40.33 based on a 35-hour work week (Schedule 'A'), and includes a comprehensive benefit package.
