About the Role

Six Nations Polytechnic is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Educational Support Specialist to join our team at the STEAM Academy. As an Educational Support Specialist, you will play a vital role in supporting the learning needs of students with diverse abilities and learning styles.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support Student Learning
    • Assist teachers in accommodating the learning needs of students with Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and those requiring extra support.
    • Implement social skills programming and work collaboratively with teachers to develop IEPs.
    • Monitor, track, and report student learning requirements and progress to teachers.
  • Classroom Support
    • Provide one-on-one assistance and/or serve as a scribe to students who require special assistance.
    • Supervise and monitor students during learning breaks, class time, extracurricular activities, and offsite class excursions.
  • Community and Professional Development
    • Assist the Principal in maintaining close affiliation with the community, including participating in regular meetings with parents or guardians and working with the community and cultural coordinator on initiatives.
    • Attend and participate in all required professional development sessions throughout the school year.
Requirements
  • Education and Experience
    • Ontario Certified Educational Assistant (EA) or Teacher Aide (TA) diploma or equivalent and Development Service Worker (DSW), or Youth Care Worker (YCW).
    • Experience working with high school students with diverse learning needs one-on-one, in small groups, and in whole class situations.
    • Experience working with youth with a variety of physical and intellectual disabilities and behavioral or other learning difficulties.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Ability to interact with students, parents, and teachers cheerfully, enthusiastically, courteously, patiently, and with discretion.
    • Broad knowledge of child development and learning strategies.
    • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with an emphasis on written expression.
    • Sound interpersonal skills, including communication, organization, problem-solving, confidentiality, and professional judgment.
