Overview:

The BC SPCA is a leading animal welfare organization with facilities and services across the province of BC.

We are seeking an Animal Care Assistant to join our team in Abbotsford, BC.

About the Position:

The main responsibility of this position is to care for the health and welfare of animals in our shelter.

A subsidiary responsibility is to provide support to our front office staff in an effective and courteous manner.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain the kennels, runs, and cat cages in a clean, sanitary, and efficient manner on an ongoing basis.
  • Treat animals humanely, with compassion and concern, and transmit these values to others both on and off the job.
  • Provide animals with proper diet and ensure they feed and water properly.
  • Ensure animal health and well-being in accordance with our animal health policy, including the administration of medications as specified by our animal health technologist or other authorized shelter staff.
  • Maintain high standards to portray our image as a compassionate and caring organization.
  • Willingly help coordinate supporting work of volunteers, in the spirit that we all work together for the benefit of all animals.
  • Perform other duties as required to ensure smooth operation of the shelter.
  • Collaborate with other shelter personnel to create a positive and harmonious atmosphere among staff and volunteers, enhancing team performance.

Secondary Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist front office staff as required in telephone reception, answering counter inquiries, receiving animals for surrender, adoption procedures, license and merchandise sales, general office routines, and record keeping.
  • Perform all of the above in a courteous, friendly way to clients, volunteers, and other staff, ensuring highest possible reputation for the shelter and maintenance of goodwill of its community.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Class N or 5 BC Drivers' License and driver's abstract
  • Demonstrable interest in all aspects of animal welfare
  • Sound knowledge of animals, their breeds, characteristics, and common diseases
  • Ability to work as a team player and demonstrable well-developed interpersonal skills
  • Basic computer skills sufficient to deal effectively with necessary front office routines
  • Excellent customer service
  • Ability to prioritize demands on time
  • Completion and demonstrated competency in the following BC SPCA courses upon hire (preferred), or within 6 months of hire: SPCA Certificate, Part 1

Salary:

$20.79 per hour
