Job Summary

The University of British Columbia is seeking a highly skilled Refrigeration Plant Operator - Ice Maker to join our team. This is a critical role that requires a strong understanding of ammonia refrigeration plant operations, safety procedures, and maintenance protocols.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate and maintain the ammonia refrigeration plant, ensuring safe and efficient operation in accordance with industry standards.
  • Conduct regular plant checks, identify potential issues, and implement corrective actions to prevent downtime and ensure optimal performance.
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks, including minor repairs, equipment checks, and cleaning of the plant and surrounding areas.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, including WorkSafeBC and Technical Safety BC requirements.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Engineer and Senior Manager, Operations to develop and implement maintenance schedules, repair plans, and safety protocols.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to clients, guests, and staff, ensuring a positive experience and resolving any issues promptly.
  • Work independently and as part of a team to achieve departmental goals and objectives.
  • Participate in emergency response situations, responding to critical incidents and ensuring minimal disruption to operations.
Requirements
  • High school graduation supplemented by related technical training, with a minimum 5th Class Power Engineering Certification and Refrigeration Operators Certificate of Competency.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in refrigeration plant operations, maintenance, and repair.
  • Valid Class 5 British Columbia driver's license.
  • Ability to lift or carry up to 50lbs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to make independent decisions and exercise good judgment.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, with a high level of flexibility and adaptability.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Building Service Worker Certificate.
  • Fork lift operating ticket.
  • Experience operating ice resurface machinery and equipment.
  • CPR and First Aid Certification.
