Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Landscape Horticulturist to join our Facilities Services department at School District #38 (Richmond). As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for overseeing grounds services, performing planning, maintenance, alteration, and construction at the journeyman level across our 53 facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and Implementation: Design, build, and lay out landscaped areas, including flower beds, courtyards, and pathways, ensuring proper drainage and site preparation.
  • Grounds Maintenance: Plan, maintain, repair, and install landscaping around District facilities, including planting, weeding, pruning, storm drainage, and general clean-up.
  • Facilities Maintenance: Maintain, repair, and install areas such as pathways, play areas, parking lots, portables, hockey rinks, and playgrounds.
  • Equipment Operation: Operate a variety of vehicles and equipment, including dump trucks, jackhammers, lawn mowers, and hand and power tools.
  • Contractor Oversight: Assist the Coordinator of Grounds Services in assigning and checking work performed by outside contractors, including asphalting, tree removal, and concrete pathways.
  • Health and Safety: Ensure compliance with District and Government health and safety procedures and regulations to minimize potential for accidents, injuries, or hazards within the Grounds Services department.
  • Training and Development: Train and advise Grounds Services employees in techniques and procedures related to gardening, landscaping, and manual labor.
  • Confidentiality: Maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information seen or heard.
  • Additional Duties: Perform other related job duties of comparable importance, difficulty, and responsibility as necessary.
Requirements
  • Education: Grade 12 or equivalent plus a BC or Interprovincial Certificate of Apprenticeship in Landscape Horticulture or equivalent apprenticeship training and a BC or Interprovincial Certificate of Qualification (T.Q.).
  • Experience: Two (2) years' experience at a journeyman level Landscape Horticulture.
  • Knowledge and Skills: Thorough knowledge of current techniques, methods, procedures, regulations, standards, and materials applicable to the trade; competency in the use and care of tools and equipment common to the trade.
  • Physical Demands: Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, pushing, pulling, and moving heavy objects, performing manual labor, and working in a variety of work locations and conditions.
  • Driver's License: Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License.
