Job Summary

The City of Ottawa is seeking a skilled Driver Safety Trainer to join its Fleet Safety and Driver Safety Training Branch. As a key member of the team, you will be responsible for delivering professional, effective, and high-quality driver safety training to ensure drivers can safely and properly operate any City vehicle or mobile equipment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver driver safety training to City drivers, including commercial vehicle operators, light-duty vehicle drivers, and emergency response vehicle operators.
  • Conduct driver risk assessments to identify and manage risk.
  • Perform duties of a Signing Authority (SA) under the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) Driver Certification Program (DCP).
  • Develop and maintain training materials and resources to ensure continuous improvement of driver safety training.

Requirements

  • Completion of Grade 12.
  • Minimum of three (3) years related experience in an adult education or adult training setting.
  • Minimum of five (5) years safe driving experience operating fleet vehicles (heavy equipment, commercial vehicles, emergency response vehicles, light-duty vehicles) or equivalent safe driving experience, with no preventable vehicle risk events within the past two (2) years.
  • Valid Ontario unrestricted "DZ" class driver's licence (or provincial equivalent) with no demerit points accumulated, as per City of Ottawa corporate standard, or the ability to obtain within the timeframe determined by the employer.

Preferred Qualifications

  • ExceleRate Assessor Certification.
  • Fleet Driver Trainer/Instructor certification (PRIDE or equivalent MTO-approved course).
  • Air Brake Instructor certification.
  • Motor Vehicle Collision Investigation training certificate.
  • Defensive Driving Course Instructor certification.
  • Mobile Crane Operator 0-8 ton (P) training certificate.
  • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1002 Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator Qualification and National Academy for Professional Driving or Emergency Response Driving course for specific positions.
