At WSP in Canada, we are seeking a skilled Senior Materials Engineer to join our team. This exciting role involves providing technical expertise in concrete and construction materials technology.

Job Description

We are looking for a highly experienced professional with a strong background in construction materials engineering, business development, and client relationship management. As a Senior Materials Engineer, you will play a key role in managing technical projects, mentoring junior engineers, and delivering on the strategic plans for growth of the BC and Canadian business.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong knowledge of engineering design principles for concrete, condition assessment, and rehabilitation design. They should also have a broad awareness of materials science, including concrete, aggregates, soil, and asphalt pavement engineering. Familiarity with testing of concrete and aggregates in accordance with CSA and ASTM Standards is essential.

A Day in the Life of this role includes:

  • Providing materials consulting engineering services for various sectors, including industrial, commercial, municipal, highway, and residential projects;
  • Remaining highly active on project delivery and billable work;
  • Preparing specifications and contract management related to concrete and construction technology;
  • Preparation and review of proposals and technical reports;
  • Concrete mix design and review;
  • Structural repair and rehabilitation;
  • Mass concrete thermal mitigation design;
  • Non-destructive evaluation of reinforced concrete;
  • Service life and durability evaluation;
  • Asphalt pavement mix design and review.

Business Development Responsibilities:

  • Procurement of work for construction materials engineering personnel;
  • Maintaining involvement in industry associations (CSA, ACI, ICRI, etc.) and undertaking activities such as conference attendance, technical committee involvement, and presentations;
  • Initiating and/or assisting other members of the Materials Team in business development and developing internal and external clients along with strong client interaction;
  • Other duties as assigned/required by the Group Lead.

Operational Management and Personnel Supervision Responsibilities:

  • Reviewing assignments prepared by junior personnel for technical accuracy;
  • Preparing or supervising the preparation of project cost estimates;
  • Responsible for the effectiveness of project management regarding the functions of project procurement, administrative and technical scope management;

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Degree in Civil or Materials Engineering discipline with a focus on construction materials;
  • Minimum 5-10 years of experience in Materials Engineering field in Canada;
  • Demonstrated ability to work with limited supervision to achieve provided objectives;
  • Demonstrated acumen with procurement of work and business development;
  • Registered P. Eng. Status, or ability to become registered, with EGBC;
  • Ability to travel occasionally out of town;
  • Ability to work in a variety of environmental conditions;
  • Must hold a valid BC Driver's License;
  • Strong technical, oral, and written communication skills.
