About the Role

We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Cree Language Educator to join our team at Fort McKay First Nation. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and instructing the Cree language program in our school, working closely with our staff, parents, and community members. This is a contract position for the school year, reporting directly to the Principal of Elsie Fabian School.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate language and culture programming and curriculum development within Fort McKay School and teach Cree language and culture in accordance with the school schedule
  • Develop a Cree Language Program that promotes best practices in learning, assessment, and instruction
  • Work with staff to promote Cree language integration in all classes and in all subjects
  • Bring Cree knowledge base of cultural competency in the design and development of resources
  • Assist in developing and conveying a positive image of Cree Language and culture to the school and community
  • Provide student assessment and reports in accordance with the school calendar
  • Work both autonomously and in teams on diverse language projects
  • In collaboration with the Language and Culture Teachers, assist with cultural events
  • Continuously provide inquiry and reflect on teaching best practices
  • Review of current literature on best practices in Cree Language and Culture
  • Attend in-services and workshops as approved by the Director of Education

Key Requirements
  • Valid Alberta Teaching Certificate
  • Extensive Knowledge of Cree Language instruction
  • Fluency in Cree language both written and oral
  • Respect and understanding for Fort McKay traditions, values, and culture
  • Enthusiasm, flexibility, dedication, and commitment to community language and culture revitalization
  • Previous teaching experience and strong classroom management skills
  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Experience working in a First Nations community, including knowledge of First Nations culture, traditions, and values, is a definite asset
  • Clean Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector required
  • Valid class 5 Driver's License & Clean Driver's Abstract required
