Senior Mechanical Engineer

As a key member of the Grocery Pick Hardware Team at Ocado Logistics, you will play a crucial role in designing and developing cutting-edge robots for our customers. Collaborating closely with other disciplines, including Software, AI, and Product, you will focus on designing subsystems for complex robotic systems.
You will be responsible for owning critical components of new projects, including end-of-arm tooling and robotic system design. Working closely with our Robotics Software and Machine Learning teams, you will ensure that your designs are mechanically sound and empower our advanced AI capabilities.
Key Responsibilities:- Design and build structural and motion assemblies, including end effectors, robot supports, and dresspacks.
- Validate designs through bench tests, analysis, and production trials.
- Create assembly drawings in SolidWorks and manage bill of materials through our PLM system.
- Develop accurate and concise assembly instructions and SOPs for installation, maintenance, and manufacturing teams.
- Work in a cross-functional team to develop technologies for production.
- Perform design reviews and promote development best practices.
- Identify improvements, engineering standards, and procedures to ensure high-quality products.
- Elevate team skills through technical mentorship and foster a culture of mentorship.
- 5+ years of experience as a mechanical engineer in a related industry.
- Ability to iterate quickly and demonstrate new concepts through rapid prototypes.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals and the ability to approach problems from first principles.
- Experience modeling and creating part drawings for sheet metal parts, weldments, precision machined components, castings, and injection molded components.
- Experience selecting, sizing, and designing for various actuator types, transmissions, and pneumatic systems.
- Proficient in SolidWorks and other major CAD packages, including FEA for a wide range of cases and materials.
- Capable of leading a small group of engineers to ensure project deliverables are completed on time.
- Conduct root cause analyses and mechanical forensic investigation.
- Experience designing systems that have reached production at scale, considering all relevant stakeholders.
- Experience mentoring and guiding junior and intermediate-level engineers and interns.
- Ability to travel internationally up to 10% of the time.
- Applicable skills in at least one of the following areas: end effector design, industrial automation, robotic work cells.
- Pneumatic system experience, including valving and instrumentation.
- Knowledge of safety systems for industrial machinery.
- Experience with analog electrical equipment, including specifying cables, connectors, and panel layouts.
- Automated test fixture creation, including PLC programming experience.
- Experience with sensor selection, integration, and signal conditioning.
- Understanding of microcontrollers/processors for limited bench-top testing.
- Hands-on experience commissioning a system.
- Knowledge of thermal calculations and conducting thermal analyses.
