Photonics Design Engineer

Lightmatter is seeking a highly skilled Photonics Design Engineer to join our team. As a key member of our photonics team, you will design, develop, and test high-performance photonic systems that are critical to our products.
In this role, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams to specify, select, and qualify photonic components, and work closely with device, hardware, and software design teams to ensure the overall development of photonic systems.
You will have the opportunity to work on groundbreaking challenges and contribute to the development of novel architectural ideas in the field of photonics.
Responsibilities:- Design high-performance photonic devices suitable for high-volume manufacturing
- Collaborate with analog, digital, and physical design teams to layout photonic devices for key test and product tape outs
- Work with the photonics test team to define requirements for device characterization, debug, and validation
- Analyze characterization data to ensure the device/system meets specifications
- Engage in problem-solving and contribute novel architectural ideas
- Publish and present novel ideas related to photonics at premier optics/photonics conferences
- PhD in EECS, Physics, or related discipline with 3 years of experience
- Knowledge of photonic device physics
- Demonstrated track record of design integrated silicon photonics components using Lumerical, Tidy3D, or equivalent
- Experience with code-based GDS creation, such as GDS Factory or similar
- Experience with large-scale layout, testing, and characterization of photonic devices
- Experience with PDK and Cadence environments a plus
- Ability to collaborate in cross-disciplinary teams
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrate strong problem-solving skills in problems without obvious solutions
- Can-do, positive attitude
- Strong publication record in the photonics field a plus
