About the Role
We are seeking a skilled Marine Mammal Acoustic Specialist to join our team at the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Canada. This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated individual to contribute to our mission of saving wildlife and wild places.
Job Summary
The successful candidate will be responsible for processing passive acoustic data to detect marine mammal and fish vocalizations, as well as measuring underwater noise levels from vessel traffic. They will also conduct fieldwork in the Canadian Arctic to maintain the acoustic monitoring network, attend community meetings with Inuvialuit partners, manage and maintain oceanographic equipment, and perform other related duties.
Key Responsibilities
- Process passive acoustic data using deep learning detectors for marine mammal vocalizations
- Manually process passive acoustic data to validate detectors
- Measure underwater noise levels from vessel traffic
- Conduct statistical analyses and write reports and manuscripts
- Prepare oceanographic equipment, recover, and deploy oceanographic moorings
- Manage acoustic data management and maintenance of oceanographic equipment
- Attend meetings with Inuvialuit partners and other organizations
Requirements
- MSc or BSc in biology, oceanography, physics, or a related field with a strong computational/analytical background
- 2 years minimum of relevant experience
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
Salary and Benefits
The estimated salary for this role is $65,000 to $75,000 annually based on experience.
