Avionics Systems Technician Job Description

Are you passionate about flying, engineering, and teamwork? The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) offers a unique opportunity to work as an Avionics Systems Technician, responsible for maintaining electronic systems onboard CAF aircraft.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform performance tests, preventive/corrective maintenance, and calibration of electronic systems and their components, including communication, intercom, search radar, fire control radar, and navigation systems.
  • Set up and operate test equipment to maintain electronic systems.
  • Operate and maintain computer-controlled automatic test stations.
  • Train and instruct in field technical training units, training squadrons, or basic training units.
  • Prepare and maintain aircraft forms and statistical data.
  • Operate aircraft support equipment.
  • Perform first-line servicing tasks such as marshalling, parking, towing, starting, refuelling, cleaning, and de-icing.
Requirements:
  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident living in Canada.
  • Be at least 18 years old (17 years old with parental consent), except for paid education programs or Primary Reserve.
  • Have completed at least Grade 10 or Secondaire IV in Quebec.
Education and Training:

The CAF offers various education and training opportunities, including the Non-commissioned Member Subsidized Training and Education Program, which provides full-time salaries and education assistance in exchange for working with the CAF for a period of time.

Work Environment:

Avionics Systems Technicians work primarily at air bases in aircraft maintenance organizations, in maintenance hangers, in airborne aircraft, in lab environments, and on the flight line. They may be required to work shifts and periods of overtime and can work in CAF wings and bases within Canada, the Arctic, and locations around the world in response to NATO and UN commitments.

Training and Development:

Avionics Systems Technicians attend training at the Canadian Forces School of Aerospace Technology and Engineering (CFSATE) in Borden, Ontario, where they complete Common Core and Trade Training. They may also have opportunities for advanced training and specialization in areas such as instructional techniques, calibration, and technical writing.
