About the Role

We are seeking a skilled Business Compliance Specialist to join our team in Hamilton. As a key member of our Licensing department, you will play a critical role in ensuring compliance with city by-laws and regulations.

Job Description

The successful candidate will be responsible for investigating, analyzing, and interpreting by-law requirements related to business licensing, zoning, signs, property standards, lottery, and yard maintenance. You will work closely with stakeholders to resolve inquiries and complaints, providing education and guidance to ensure compliance.

You will also be involved in enforcing by-law requirements, issuing orders, administrative penalty notices, tickets, and summonses as necessary. Your duties will include preparing written reports, briefs, evidence, and other related documents, as well as conducting inspections and investigations.

This is a fast-paced role that requires strong communication and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

Responsibilities
  • Investigate and analyze by-law requirements related to business licensing, zoning, signs, property standards, lottery, and yard maintenance
  • Work with stakeholders to resolve inquiries and complaints, providing education and guidance to ensure compliance
  • Enforce by-law requirements, including issuing orders, administrative penalty notices, tickets, and summonses as necessary
  • Prepare written reports, briefs, evidence, and other related documents
  • Conduct inspections and investigations as required
Requirements
  • Previous law enforcement experience or relevant education (Law and Security Administration or Police Foundations)
  • Completion of the Ontario Property Standards Association of Ontario Basic Course (Level I) or ability to complete within one year
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply by-laws and legislation
  • Proven problem-solving ability and a focus on an Open for Business approach
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Able to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team
What We Offer

We offer a competitive salary range of $60,000 - $80,000 per year, depending on experience. In addition, we provide a comprehensive benefits package, including health and dental insurance, retirement savings plan, and paid time off.
